What does energy class A mean for a dishwasher?
Energy class A is the most efficient band on the current A-to-G EU dishwasher label. The classification is calculated from standardized Eco-program performance and is intended to compare machines at their rated capacity.
The label also reports energy per 100 Eco cycles, water per Eco cycle, rated place settings, Eco duration, and airborne-noise information. Compare all of these fields because two A-rated machines can differ in water use, capacity, noise, and cycle time.
Class A does not mean every program uses the Eco figure or that cleaning and drying are automatically superior. Quick, intensive, hygiene, and extra-dry options can consume more, while rack design and loading habits determine whether the rated efficiency is achieved in daily use.
How much energy and water does an A-rated dishwasher use?
An A-rated dishwasher commonly uses about 0.49–0.55 kWh and 9–10 L of water on its Eco cycle. At one cycle per day, that is roughly 180–200 kWh and 3,300–3,700 L per year, although actual consumption changes with programs, loading, inlet conditions, and maintenance.
Eco cycles reduce heating demand by running longer. Automatic, intensive, quick, hygiene, and extra-dry modes may use more energy or water, so compare the cycles expected in normal use rather than applying the label value to every wash.
Capacity changes the interpretation: most A-rated machines hold 14 settings. A full load can be efficient per item, while repeated partial loads, overcrowding, or rewashing can remove much of the saving.

Are A-rated dishwashers worth the higher purchase price?
A-rated dishwashers are worth a higher purchase price mainly for households that run frequent full loads and keep the machine long enough to recover the premium. A typical A-rated model uses about 0.54 kWh per Eco cycle, compared with roughly 0.65 kWh for B and 0.75 kWh for C.
For example, at 280 cycles per year and an illustrative electricity price of £0 per kWh, moving from 0.75 to 0.54 kWh saves about 58 kWh or £10 annually. A £170 price premium therefore takes roughly 12 years to recover from electricity alone; at 365 cycles per year, the same example saves about £20 annually and shortens simple payback to around 9 years.
Water often remains close to 9–10 L per Eco cycle across A-to-C full-size models, so most of the direct saving comes from electricity. - Required capacity: Most models hold about 14 settings, a practical capacity for 3–5 people; 15–16 settings are better for 4–6 people or regular entertaining. Choose for peak mixed loads and avoid a size that encourages frequent half loads or overcrowding.
