Third-party reviews

What we like about Suunto Vertical

  • 60 days of battery life covers a whole summer of weekend hikes.
  • 60 h with GPS on covers several long mountain days.
  • Dual-band GPS stays accurate in valleys and forests.
  • Offline topographic maps come with no subscription.
  • The 100 m water resistance suits swimming and rain.
  • The solar power battery adds a small top-up on sunny trails.

What we don't like about Suunto Vertical

  • There is no camera remote control.
  • The MIP display is not AMOLED, so colors look more muted.
  • Wrist heart rate drops out during fast trail running or hard cycling.
  • No music storage, so music is controlled only from a connected phone.
  • At 74 g with a 14 mm case, it is heavy and thick on the wrist.

Verdict

The Suunto Vertical's headline number is 60 days in watch mode. It suits hikers, climbers and mountain runners who spend weeks away from a charger. In tests, dual-band GPS tracked for 55 to 58 hours in real mountain conditions, and the offline topographic maps come with contour lines and no subscription. Return-to-start and go-to-point navigation is easy to set up. Solar charging adds little, about 1 percent after two hours in full sun in tests. The MIP screen is not AMOLED, so colors look more muted, though it stays readable in bright sun. The case is 74 g and 14 mm thick. There is no camera remote control, but the touchscreen and buttons still respond in rain or gloves. It is built for a serious outdoor user who values battery and maps over screen looks.
