Third-party reviews

What we like about Garmin Fenix 8

  • 16 days of battery life on a charge means fewer stops at the charger.
  • 47 h of GPS battery covers most long backcountry trips.
  • Dual-frequency GPS keeps the track accurate in city canyons and forest.
  • Offline topographic maps with contour lines help you stay on course.
  • A white and red LED flashlight helps on night trail runs.
  • Heart rate readings stayed within 1.4 bpm of a chest strap in tests.

What we don't like about Garmin Fenix 8

  • At 13.8 mm thick and 72 g with the strap, it feels bulky.
  • There is no cellular connection, so calls and messages need a phone nearby.
  • Map zooming can take a few seconds.
  • The speaker and microphone are rarely useful.
  • Dual-frequency GPS mode cannot last through a 30 h ultra race.

Verdict

Long days outside are where the Garmin Fenix 8 earns its place. It lasts 16 days on a charge and 47 h with GPS on, so long trips need little planning around power. Topographic maps are stored on the watch, and dual-frequency GPS switches on in forest and city canyons to keep the track accurate. A white and red LED flashlight helps with night trail runs. Crash detection, emergency SOS and ECG add a safety net on the trail. The trade-off is size: at 13.8 mm thick and 72 g with the silicone strap, you notice it over long distances. There is no cellular connection, so your phone must be close by to call or message. It suits a backcountry hiker or serious runner who values maps and battery life over a slim design.
