What we like about Panasonic LUMIX DMC FZ300

  • Constant f/2.8 aperture across the entire 24x zoom range (25-600mm equivalent)
  • High-quality 4K video recording and 4K photo mode to extract 8MP stills
  • Weather-sealed, splash-proof, and dust-proof body design for outdoor use
  • Fast and accurate autofocus performance using Depth From Defocus (DFD) technology
  • Fully articulated OLED touchscreen and a high-resolution electronic viewfinder
  • Comprehensive manual controls and professional features like a dedicated microphone jack
  • Effective 5-axis image stabilization for smoother handheld shooting

What we don't like about Panasonic LUMIX DMC FZ300

  • Small 1/2.3-inch sensor limits performance in low-light conditions and results in digital noise
  • JPEG image quality can suffer from heavy noise reduction and over-sharpening artifacts
  • Autofocus can struggle with tracking fast-moving subjects like birds in flight
  • Larger and bulkier than other small-sensor superzoom cameras due to the high-quality lens
  • No headphone jack for monitoring audio during video recording
  • Battery and SD card access is located on the bottom, which can be blocked by tripod plates

Verdict

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 is a versatile bridge camera featuring a 12.1MP 1/2.3-inch MOS sensor and a constant f/2.8 Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with a 25-600mm equivalent zoom range. Key characteristics include 4K video recording at 30fps, 5-axis hybrid optical image stabilization, and a weather-sealed body that is both splash and dustproof. Its main pros are the bright constant aperture across the full zoom range, fast Depth-From-Defocus autofocus, high-speed burst shooting up to 12fps, and a high-resolution OLED electronic viewfinder. However, some cons include limited low-light performance due to its small sensor, heavy default noise reduction that can smudge fine details at higher ISO settings, and corner softness at telephoto focal lengths.
