Third-party reviews

What we like about Suunto Ocean

  • Dive mode is rated for 50 h, enough for several days of diving.
  • The wireless tank sensor shows tank pressure on your wrist.
  • Dual-frequency GPS keeps tracks steady in cities and among trees.
  • A 100 m waterproof rating covers swimming and snorkelling.
  • A 20 min charge covers a one-hour dive.
  • Free offline maps help you find the way on land.

What we don't like about Suunto Ocean

  • At 99 g it is heavy for all-day wear.
  • The 49.9 mm case is too big for thin wrists.
  • A standard strap feels short over a thick wetsuit.
  • No Trimix or CCR support, so technical divers need another computer.
  • Firmware must be updated before every dive.

Verdict

Divers who also want a sports watch for land will find the Suunto Ocean a practical choice. Its wireless tank sensor shows air use on your wrist, and dive mode is rated for 50 h. The battery is rated for 12 days, and in tests it ran about four days with three dives a day. Dual-frequency GPS and free offline maps keep it useful on hikes and runs too, and a 20 min charge covers a one-hour dive or a two-hour run. The trade-off is size. At 99 g and 49.9 mm it is a large watch for thin wrists, and a standard strap feels short over a thick wetsuit. It suits a diver who wants one watch for the boat, the trail and the pool, and does not mind the bulk.
