Third-party reviews

What we like about Suunto 9 Peak Pro

  • Battery life of 30 days means fewer charges on long trips.
  • 40 h with GPS on covers a full day in the hills.
  • Waterproof to 100 m suits swimming and open-water sessions.
  • 115 exercise modes cover most outdoor and indoor sports.
  • At 52 g in the 43 mm size, it is light enough for all-day wear.
  • The buttons work with gloves on.

What we don't like about Suunto 9 Peak Pro

  • The 1.2 inch screen with 300 nits is hard to read in bright sun.
  • Wrist heart rate is less reliable in hard intervals, so a chest strap is advised.
  • No built-in maps, so routes only come as preloaded breadcrumb trails.
  • No fall detection or crash detection.
  • No music storage or contactless payments.

Verdict

The 30 days of battery life on the Suunto 9 Peak Pro sounds generous, and it is, but the figure that matters on a long hike is 40 h with GPS running. In tests it reached about 21 days of daily wear, which is still plenty for a trip. At 52 g in the 43 mm size it is easy to forget on the wrist during a long day. The GPS locks quickly in mountains and dense forest, and the buttons still work with gloves on. The trade-off is the wrist heart rate sensor, which is less reliable in hard intervals, so a chest strap helps there. It suits a hiker, runner or triathlete who wants a rugged watch that lasts well beyond a weekend and does not need music or payments.
