Third-party reviews

What we like about Olympus PEN E-PL5

  • Excellent image quality with very good detail rendering, both in JPEG and RAW format.
  • Outstanding low-light performance with very good digital noise control up to high ISOs.
  • Fast and responsive autofocus during standard shots.
  • Very effective in-body image stabilization to prevent camera shake.
  • Tilting and touchscreen rear screen, very practical for shooting from different angles.
  • Presence of a flash shoe allowing the addition of an electronic viewfinder (EVF).

What we don't like about Olympus PEN E-PL5

  • Complex ergonomics: the buttons and rear dial are considered small, unreliable or difficult to manipulate.
  • Very dense menu system, sometimes illogical and not very intuitive for beginners.
  • The video mode is behind current standards and disappointing in terms of quality.
  • Shutter micro-vibration phenomenon which can sometimes cause slightly blurred images at certain speeds.
  • Autofocus tracking (continuous autofocus) less efficient than on SLRs or more recent hybrid models.

Verdict

The Olympus PEN E-PL5 is a compact Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera featuring a high-performance 16.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic VI processor, enabling a broad ISO range of 200–25,600 and fast 8 fps burst shooting. Key characteristics include a 3-inch tilting touchscreen (460k-dot) that flips 170° for selfies, dual-axis in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) effective with any lens, and Full HD 1080/30p video recording. Its main pros are excellent image quality comparable to the flagship OM-D E-M5, a portable metal-polycarbonate body with a removable front grip, and exceptionally fast contrast-detect autofocus with 35 points. Notable cons include a complex and often confusing menu system, a 16:9 screen ratio that results in significant black bars when shooting in the native 4:3 format, the lack of a built-in flash (requiring an external clip-on unit), and no integrated Wi-Fi or electronic viewfinder.
