Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Leica D Lux 7

  • Compact and lightweight design, making it an excellent 'everyday carry' or travel camera.
  • Fast, bright lens (f/1.7-2.8) that provides good low-light performance and shallow depth of field.
  • Large Micro Four Thirds sensor for its size class, offering superior image quality compared to smartphones or 1-inch sensor compacts.
  • Tactile physical controls, including a dedicated aperture ring, shutter speed dial, and aspect ratio switch.
  • Fast and precise autofocus that is well-suited for street photography.
  • Seamless connectivity with the Leica FOTOS app for quick image sharing.

What we don't like about Leica D Lux 7

  • High price point compared to its technical twin, the Panasonic Lumix LX100 II, which offers nearly identical specs for less money.
  • Poor low-light performance at high ISO settings, with noticeable digital noise appearing above ISO 3200.
  • Small buttons and a complex menu system can make navigation and muscle memory difficult.
  • Outdated hardware features, including a million-dot electronic viewfinder and a micro-USB charging port rather than USB-C.
  • The camera is not weather-sealed, making it vulnerable in harsh environments.
  • Handling can be slippery due to the lack of a built-in grip without purchasing optional accessories.

Verdict

The Leica D-Lux 7 is a premium compact camera featuring a 17MP Four Thirds MOS sensor and a fast 24-75mm equivalent f/1.7-2.8 Vario-Summilux lens with optical image stabilisation. Key characteristics include a high-resolution 2.76m-dot electronic viewfinder, a 3-inch 1.24m-dot touchscreen, 4K video recording at 30fps, and integrated Bluetooth/Wi-Fi for the Leica FOTOS app. Its main pros are its travel-friendly magnesium alloy body, tactile manual control dials for aperture and shutter speed, and high-speed 11fps continuous shooting. However, its main cons include a lack of weather sealing, the absence of a built-in handgrip, and contrast-based autofocus that can struggle with fast-moving subjects or low-light noise compared to more modern systems.
