What we like about Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX9V

  • Excellent video quality and Full HD recording with high bit rates
  • Versatile 16x optical zoom lens (24-384mm equivalent) in a compact, pocket-sized body
  • Excellent low-light performance and effective image stabilization
  • Robust design and high build quality with a great rubberized grip
  • High resolution, bright and easily readable LCD screen
  • Much appreciated additional features such as built-in GPS and Sweep Panorama mode

What we don't like about Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX9V

  • Absence of RAW shooting format, limiting control in post-production
  • Battery charging integrated into the camera body, considered inconvenient compared to an external charger
  • Starting video recording requires a slight delay of a few seconds
  • Tendency to burn out highlights (overexposure) when using full auto mode
  • Lack of an electronic viewfinder, making use awkward in bright sunlight

Verdict

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is a versatile travel-zoom compact featuring a 16.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor and a powerful 16x optical zoom G-series lens (24-384mm equivalent). It is distinguished by its ability to record Full HD 1080/60p video with stereo sound, built-in GPS with a compass for geotagging, and a high-resolution 3.0-inch 921k-dot LCD screen. Main pros include its exceptionally fast autofocus, a rapid 10fps burst shooting mode at full resolution, and innovative features like Intelligent Sweep Panorama and handheld low-light modes. However, it lacks RAW support, exhibits aggressive noise reduction that can lead to a 'watercolor' effect at higher ISO settings, and has a somewhat sluggish user interface.
