Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Ricoh G900

  • Extreme industrial durability (waterproof to 20m, shockproof, dustproof, and crushproof up to 100kgf)
  • Chemical resistance, allowing disinfection with ethanol or sodium hypochlorite for medical/sterile environments
  • Comprehensive enterprise features including barcode scanning, password protection, and text/voice memos
  • Excellent macro capabilities with a built-in 6-LED ring light for shadow-free close-ups
  • Generous 6.5GB of internal storage, useful if an SD card is forgotten or for high-security data management
  • Strong connectivity and positioning with built-in GPS, electronic compass, and webcam functionality

What we don't like about Ricoh G900

  • High price point compared to consumer rugged cameras like the Ricoh WG-6 or OM System TG-7
  • Small 1/2.3-inch sensor leads to limited dynamic range and higher noise in low-light conditions
  • Lack of RAW capture significantly limits post-processing flexibility for professional photographers
  • Fixed LCD screen without tilt or touch functionality
  • Menu system and advanced professional settings can be cumbersome and complicated for casual use
  • Relatively slow continuous shooting speed (approx. 1.0 fps) and lacks an electronic viewfinder

Verdict

The Ricoh G900 is an industrial-grade compact camera featuring a 20-megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens (28-140mm equivalent). Designed for extreme environments, it is waterproof up to 20 metres for two hours, shockproof against drops from 2.1 metres, and uniquely chemical-resistant to ethanol and sodium hypochlorite. Main pros include its specialized toolset for professionals, such as a six-LED macro ring light, integrated GPS with an electronic compass, and a robust camera memo system with barcode scanning for streamlined data management. However, its specialized focus results in some cons, including a relatively high price point compared to standard rugged cameras, poor performance in low-light conditions due to its small sensor, and a lack of built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity.
