What we like about Leica X2

  • Excellent image quality with sharp, natural color reproduction and 'Leica-like' rendering.
  • Greatly improved battery life compared to the predecessor (X1).
  • Iconic, high-quality build and 'sexy' minimalist design.
  • Simpler, more intuitive manual controls with stiffer, reliable physical dials.
  • Support for an external tilting electronic viewfinder (EVF) for better composition.
  • Compact and lightweight enough for street and everyday carry photography.
  • Silent operation when electronic sounds are disabled.

What we don't like about Leica X2

  • Low-resolution rear LCD screen (230k dots) that is difficult to use in bright light.
  • Autofocus is improved over the X1 but still considered slow and 'laggy' by modern standards.
  • High retail price relative to competitors like the Fujifilm X100 series.
  • Maximum aperture of f/2.8 is seen as limited compared to f/2.0 on similar compacts.
  • External EVF adds bulk and takes away from the camera's sleek aesthetic.
  • Lacks a built-in viewfinder.
  • Poor video quality and implementation.

Verdict

The Leica X2 is a premium large-sensor compact camera featuring a 16.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor paired with a fixed Leica Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH lens, providing a classic 35mm equivalent focal length ideal for street photography. Main characteristics include its retro, M-series inspired all-metal design, dedicated manual dials for aperture and shutter speed, and an ISO range of 100 to 12,500. Its primary pros are its exceptional image sharpness, natural colour reproduction, improved autofocus speed compared to its predecessor, and a generous battery life rated for approximately 450 shots. However, its notable cons include a low-resolution 2.7-inch LCD screen with only 230,000 dots, a lack of video recording capabilities, and a relatively slow 5fps continuous shooting rate with a shallow buffer.
