Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Canon PowerShot SX150 IS

  • Impressive 12x optical zoom for its class and price
  • Full manual controls (PASM modes) that appeal to advanced users
  • Effective optical image stabilisation reduces blur in photos and videos
  • Excellent macro mode with a close focus distance of up to 1cm
  • Uses standard AA batteries, making it easy to find replacements anywhere
  • Sharp and natural image quality, especially in good lighting conditions

What we don't like about Canon PowerShot SX150 IS

  • Poor battery life, particularly when using standard alkaline batteries
  • High levels of digital noise at ISO 400 and above, leading to loss of detail
  • Painfully slow performance, including slow shot-to-shot times and continuous shooting
  • Bulky and heavy design compared to other compact superzoom cameras
  • Limited video capabilities, topping out at 720p with no Full HD or HDMI output
  • Noticeable softness and loss of sharpness towards the edges of the frame

Verdict

The Canon PowerShot SX150 IS is a versatile compact superzoom featuring a 14.1-megapixel CCD sensor and a 12x optical zoom lens with a 28–336mm equivalent focal range. Its main characteristics include an 'Intelligent' optical image stabilisation system, a 3-inch LCD screen, and a dedicated movie button for 720p HD video recording. The camera is praised for its approachable 'Smart Auto' and 'Easy' modes alongside full manual (PASM) controls, making it suitable for both beginners and hobbyists seeking creative flexibility. However, its primary drawbacks are sluggish overall performance, high image noise at ISO settings above 400, and a relatively short battery life when powered by standard alkaline AA batteries.
