What we like about Canon EOS 1D C

  • Stellar 4K image quality with a gritty, film-like aesthetic and excellent detail
  • World-class low-light performance at high ISO settings
  • Built like a tank with professional-grade weather sealing and durability
  • Internal 4K recording to CF cards without needing external recorders
  • Excellent dual-purpose performance as both a cinema camera and a flagship 18MP stills camera
  • Impressive battery life for a cinema-capable DSLR, running up to 90 minutes
  • No 30-minute record limit in Full HD, allowing for extended continuous recording

What we don't like about Canon EOS 1D C

  • Massive file sizes due to the 4K Motion JPEG codec (approx. 3.6GB per minute)
  • Significant 1.3x crop factor when shooting in 4K mode
  • Lacks dedicated video features such as peaking, zebras, or a physical record button
  • Rolling shutter artifacts can be prominent during fast motion
  • 8-bit recording can lead to banding issues, especially in Canon Log at low ISOs
  • Heavy and bulky form factor can be difficult for handheld 'run and gun' shooting
  • Inconvenient ergonomics, such as requiring Live View activation every time the camera is powered on

Verdict

The Canon EOS-1D C is a professional hybrid DSLR featuring an 18.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 5+ processors, distinguished as the first DSLR to record 4K video (4096 x 2160) internally at 24p using a Motion JPEG codec. Its core characteristics include a rugged, weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, a 61-point high-density reticular AF system, and high-speed continuous stills shooting at up to 14 fps. Key pros include exceptional low-light performance with a native ISO up to 51,200 (expandable to 204,800), the inclusion of Canon Log Gamma for 12 stops of dynamic range, and a dedicated headphone jack for audio monitoring. However, notable cons include a significant 1.3x crop factor when shooting in 4K, the absence of focus peaking or zebra tools, limited battery life during 4K recording, and reliance on expensive high-speed CF cards to handle the high bitrate MJPEG files.
