What we don't like about Samsung Gear 2

  • Restricted compatibility limited to a specific list of Samsung Galaxy devices
  • Limited selection of high-quality third-party apps in the Tizen ecosystem
  • Expensive price point, especially compared to the camera-less Gear 2 Neo
  • Inconsistent heart rate monitor and fitness tracking data accuracy

  • Requires a proprietary clip-on charging dongle that is easy to lose
  • Syncing issues between the watch and the S Health mobile application

Verdict

The Samsung Gear 2 is a Tizen-based smartwatch featuring a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display (320x320), a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage. Its standout characteristics include a 2.0-megapixel camera capable of 720p video, an IR blaster for TV remote functionality, and an IP67 water-resistance rating. Main pros include a vibrant screen, a standalone music player, a built-in heart rate monitor, and improved 2–3 day battery life compared to its predecessor. However, notable cons include its strict compatibility limited only to select Samsung Galaxy devices, a bulky design, and a relatively small ecosystem of third-party apps.
