What we like about Sony SLT-A99V

  • Excellent 24MP full-frame image quality with good dynamic range and noise performance
  • High-resolution OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) is sharp and preferred over optical viewfinders
  • Fast, continuous autofocus for both stills and video due to SLT Translucent Mirror technology
  • Articulating screen (tilts/swivels) for flexible shooting angles
  • Robust build quality with a magnesium alloy, weather-sealed chassis
  • Dual SD card slots for increased storage flexibility
  • Great manual focus support with excellent focus peaking

What we don't like about Sony SLT-A99V

  • Battery life is relatively poor, especially when using GPS or shooting extensively
  • Video specifications (lack of 4K) are outdated by modern standards
  • SLT technology results in slight light loss (approx. 0.5 EV) compared to traditional DSLRs
  • No touchscreen capability

Verdict

The Sony SLT-A99V is a professional-grade A-mount camera featuring a 24.3-megapixel full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor and a unique Translucent Mirror design that enables high-speed performance and continuous phase-detection autofocus in both stills and Full HD 60p video. Key characteristics include a dual AF system with 19 primary sensors (11 cross-type) and 102 focal plane points, a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, built-in GPS, and a versatile three-way tilting 1.23M-dot LCD alongside a high-resolution 2.4M-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder. Its main advantages are fast 6 fps burst shooting (up to 10 fps in tele-zoom mode), excellent high-ISO performance up to 25,600, and integrated sensor-shift image stabilisation; however, it lacks an optical viewfinder and a built-in flash, has a relatively short CIPA-rated battery life of approximately 410 shots, and lacks modern 4K video capabilities.
