What we like about Pentax WG-3

  • Class-leading ruggedness and durability (waterproof to 14m/45ft, shockproof, crushproof, and cold-proof)
  • Bright, fast wide-angle lens ($f/2.0$) allowing for better low-light performance
  • Built-in macro LED ring light for excellent close-up/microscope shots
  • Ergonomic, rubberised design is easy to grip in cold or wet conditions
  • Advanced GPS features (compass, altitude tracking, and geotagging) for outdoor excursions

What we don't like about Pentax WG-3

  • Image quality is merely average; pictures can suffer from noise at higher ISO settings
  • Autofocus can be slow and sluggish in low-light conditions
  • Battery life is below average and drains quickly when using the GPS
  • The camera's built-in flash is relatively weak and takes time to recharge
  • The rear LCD screen can be prone to scratching during rough use

Verdict

The Pentax WG-3 is a rugged adventure camera featuring a 16-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor and a fast 4x optical zoom lens (25-100mm equivalent) with a bright f/2.0 maximum aperture. Engineered for extreme durability, it is waterproof to 14 metres, shockproof from 2-metre drops, crushproof against 100kgf, and freezeproof to -10°C. Main advantages include its dual shake reduction system, a dedicated 1cm macro mode supported by six ring-mounted LED lights for uniform close-up illumination, and a 3-inch 460k-dot widescreen LCD. However, it suffers from a relatively slow 1.5fps full-resolution burst rate, noticeable purple fringing in high-contrast shots, and significant noise at higher ISO settings, while lacking the GPS and inductive charging found in its premium variant.
