What we like about Pentax K-50

  • Excellent value for money with high-end features
  • Weather-sealed and dust-resistant
  • Pentaprism viewfinder with 100% coverage
  • In-body image stabilization (Shake Reduction)
  • Compatibility with AA batteries in addition to the rechargeable battery
  • Ergonomic and with double control dial
  • Fast response and good autofocus

What we don't like about Pentax K-50

  • Limited video performance and no microphone input
  • Rolling shutter problems in video
  • The focusing system has only 11 points, limiting coverage
  • Not the best option for advanced users looking for top-of-the-line professional features

Verdict

The Pentax K-50 is a mid-level DSLR featuring a 16.28-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, a PRIME M image processor, and a high sensitivity range reaching ISO 51,200. Its rugged polycarbonate body is fully weather-sealed with 81 seals, making it dustproof and cold-resistant to -10°C, while offering a glass pentaprism viewfinder with 100% field of view and a 6 fps continuous shooting rate. Key advantages include built-in sensor-shift shake reduction, a fast 1/6000 sec maximum shutter speed, and the unique ability to use four AA batteries via an optional adapter. However, the camera is held back by a dated 11-point autofocus system that struggles with tracking, the lack of an external microphone input for its 1080p video mode, and a fixed 3-inch LCD screen that lacks articulation.
