Third-party reviews

What we like about Panasonic LUMIX DMC GM5

  • Extremely compact and lightweight body, often described as pocketable
  • Integrated electronic viewfinder (EVF), a rare feature for its size
  • High build quality with premium tactile controls like metal dials
  • Excellent image quality from a 16MP Micro Four Thirds sensor
  • Intuitive and responsive touchscreen interface
  • Fast and reliable autofocus with a silent electronic shutter mode
  • Full compatibility with the extensive Micro Four Thirds lens ecosystem

What we don't like about Panasonic LUMIX DMC GM5

  • Short battery life, often requiring users to carry spares
  • Cramped ergonomics and small controls that can be difficult to handle
  • Lack of in-body image stabilization (IBIS)
  • The 16:9 aspect ratio screen is a poor match for the 4:3 native sensor
  • Small EVF image can feel distant or cramped for some users
  • Missing built-in flash, though a small external one is often included
  • Relatively high price on the used market due to its rare status

Verdict

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM5 is an ultra-compact mirrorless camera featuring a 16-megapixel Micro Four Thirds Live MOS sensor and the Venus Engine processor, capable of Full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps. Encased in a magnesium alloy frame measuring approximately 98.5 x 59.5 x 36.1mm, it distinguishes itself with a built-in 1,166k-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) and a 3-inch 921k-dot touchscreen. Key advantages include its pocket-sized portability, high-speed contrast-detect autofocus, and the inclusion of a hot shoe for external flash units. However, notable drawbacks include a relatively short battery life rated at approximately 220 shots, a slow flash sync speed of 1/50s, and ergonomics that can feel fiddly for users with larger hands.
