Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Panasonic LUMIX DMC FH20

  • Extremely compact and lightweight metal body, easily fitting into a pocket
  • Versatile 8x optical zoom range (28-224mm equivalent)
  • Effective Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) helps reduce blur
  • Intuitive and easy-to-use menu system with a dedicated Intelligent Auto (iA) mode
  • Fast autofocus (Sonic Speed AF) and minimal shutter lag
  • Good overall image quality in bright outdoor lighting

What we don't like about Panasonic LUMIX DMC FH20

  • Significant image noise and graininess at higher ISO settings (above ISO 400)
  • Softness in image corners and at full telephoto zoom
  • Limited manual control options for more advanced photographers
  • Video recording uses Motion JPEG format, which results in very large file sizes
  • Small 2.7-inch LCD screen with relatively low resolution (230k dots)
  • No HDMI output for direct HD video playback on TVs

Verdict

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 is an ultra-compact 14.1-megapixel point-and-shoot camera featuring a versatile 28-224mm equivalent lens with an 8x optical zoom and integrated optical image stabilization. Powered by the Venus Engine processor, it offers 720p HD video recording, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, and an Intelligent Auto mode that streamlines scene selection. Its primary strengths include its lightweight 178g design, fast shutter speeds up to 1/1600th of a second, and a bright f/3.3 aperture at wide-angle settings. However, it suffers from several limitations, most notably the inability to use the optical zoom once video recording has started and a significant decline in image quality at higher ISO sensitivities or in low-light environments.
