What we like about Olympus Tough TG-5

  • Extremely durable and rugged construction (waterproof, shockproof, crushproof)
  • Improved low-light image quality due to 12MP sensor
  • Fast f/2.0 lens at wide angle
  • 4K video capability with slow-motion options
  • Excellent, bright, and sharp image quality in good lighting
  • Good, ergonomic button placement and easy to use with gloves
  • Fast autofocus in daylight and solid tracking sensors (GPS, thermometer)

What we don't like about Olympus Tough TG-5

  • Image quality is soft at the telephoto end of the zoom
  • Autofocus can struggle and hunt in low-light situations
  • Disappointing battery life, especially when shooting 4K video
  • Menu system is often considered complex or convoluted
  • No touchscreen capability
  • Significant video autofocus issues (continuous focus drifting)

Verdict

The Olympus Tough TG-5 is a rugged compact camera featuring a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and a fast 25-100mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.0-4.9 lens. Designed for extreme environments, it is waterproof to 15m, shockproof from 2.1m, crushproof to 100kg, and freezeproof to -10°C. Key pros include 4K video capture, RAW support, an impressive 20fps burst shooting rate, and an advanced 'Microscope' macro system that focuses as close as 1cm. However, noted cons include a relatively low-resolution 460k-dot rear LCD, the omission of a full manual exposure mode, and disappointing continuous autofocus performance during video recording.
