What we like about Olympus SZ-15

  • Impressive 24x optical zoom range (25-600mm equivalent) for its compact size
  • Lightweight and portable design, making it very easy to handle for daily use
  • Effective dual image stabilization that helps reduce blur in long-range shots
  • Strong macro performance with a dedicated Super Macro mode for close-ups
  • User-friendly interface and simple operation suitable for beginners
  • Affordable price point for a superzoom camera

What we don't like about Olympus SZ-15

  • Noticeable image noise and loss of detail at ISO settings above 400
  • Lack of full manual exposure controls (no Aperture or Shutter Priority modes)
  • Slow lens at the telephoto end (f/5.9 maximum aperture)
  • Video recording limited to 720p HD instead of full 1080p
  • Fixed LCD screen without swivel or tilt capability, making selfies difficult
  • No support for RAW image files; limited to JPEG processing
  • Underwhelming battery life and lack of a built-in viewfinder

Verdict

The Olympus SZ-15 is a compact superzoom camera featuring a 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor and a versatile 24x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal range of 25-600mm. Its main characteristics include sensor-shift image stabilisation to reduce blur, a 3.0-inch 460k-dot LCD screen, and 720p HD video recording capability. Pros include its impressive zoom reach for a small body, ease of use for point-and-shoot photography, and a dedicated Super Macro mode that allows focusing as close as 3cm. However, cons include poor low-light performance due to high noise at ISO settings above 400, a lack of RAW support, and relatively slow processing speeds between shots.
