What we like about Olympus SZ-10

  • Extremely compact and lightweight for an 18x superzoom, making it very portable
  • Excellent optical zoom range (28-504mm equivalent) for its size
  • Good image quality in bright light with a 14-megapixel sensor
  • Very good, comfortable rubber grips on the body
  • Capable of close-up, macro photography (1cm focus distance)
  • Fun and useful 3D image and panorama shooting modes

What we don't like about Olympus SZ-10

  • Short battery life, roughly 220 shots
  • Small aperture at full zoom results in higher ISO needed, causing noise
  • Video resolution is limited to 720p, not Full HD
  • No wireless connectivity features
  • The 'shadow adjustment' setting can blur images, requiring it to be turned off
  • Not weather-sealed, requires care in dusty or humid environments

Verdict

The Olympus SZ-10 is a compact travel-zoom camera featuring a 14-megapixel CCD sensor and a versatile 18x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal range of 28–504mm. It includes a 3.0-inch LCD screen with 460,000 dots, sensor-shift image stabilisation to reduce blur, and the ability to record 720p HD video. Main pros include its lightweight and highly portable design, impressive zoom reach for its size, and creative features like 'Magic Art Filters' and a 3D photo mode. However, cons include subpar image quality in low light due to a maximum ISO of only 1600, relatively slow overall performance speeds, and a video resolution limited to 720p while competitors often offer 1080p.
