What we like about Olympus Stylus SH-2

  • Extraordinary 24x optical zoom combined with excellent 5-axis image stabilization.
  • Presence of the RAW format, a highly appreciated feature for creative control in post-production.
  • Compact and elegant design with a sturdy metal body, ideal for travel.
  • Excellent color rendering and sharpness for daytime and outdoor shots.

What we don't like about Olympus Stylus SH-2

  • Poor low-light performance; there is noise and loss of detail at high ISO.
  • Limited maximum telephoto aperture, requiring plenty of light to avoid slow shutter speeds.
  • Lack of advanced manual controls, making it less suitable for professional photographers.

Verdict

The Olympus Stylus SH-2 is a premium retro-styled compact travel zoom camera featuring a 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor and a massive 24x optical zoom lens with a 25-600mm equivalent focal range and f/3.0-6.9 aperture. Key characteristics include a sophisticated 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation system, RAW format support, Full HD 1080/60p video, 11.5 fps burst shooting, and built-in Wi-Fi. Its main pros are the incredible focal reach packed into a pocketable alloy body, steady handheld shots at extreme zoom or low-light conditions, and dedicated nightscape modes. However, notable cons include strong image smoothing and heavily processed, waxy JPEG outputs, a low-resolution 460,000-dot touchscreen, and the complete lack of an eye-level electronic viewfinder.
