Third-party reviews

What we like about Olympus PEN E-P2

  • Durable, handsome metal body construction with a premium and compact retro design
  • Astonishing 720p HD video quality
  • Snappy autofocus system
  • Excellent inclusion of a clear, smooth Electronic Viewfinder (EVF)
  • Great image quality with beautiful color reproduction and tone
  • Plenty of creative, fun in-camera Art Filters (e.g., pinhole, film grain, cross-process)
  • Highly compatible with Micro Four Thirds lenses
  • Intuitive controls and quick on-the-fly adjustment options

What we don't like about Olympus PEN E-P2

  • Lower-than-expected LCD resolution (230K dots)
  • Lacks a built-in flash or pop-up flash
  • Relies on an external/accessory EVF (which adds bulk)
  • High ISO performance at night requires careful shooting and tripod use
  • Expensive price point compared to some market alternatives

Verdict

The Olympus PEN E-P2 is a premium Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera featuring a 12.3-megapixel High-Speed Live MOS sensor, a TruePic V imaging engine, and a durable retro-styled metal body. Key technical specifications include in-body sensor-shift image stabilisation offering up to 4 stops of compensation, 720p HD video recording at 30 fps with stereo sound, and an ISO range of 100 to 6400. Its primary advantages are its compact and high-quality build, excellent JPEG image quality with vivid 'Art Filters', and the inclusion of a high-resolution 1.44 million-dot VF-2 electronic viewfinder via a dedicated accessory port. However, it suffers from a relatively low-resolution 230,000-dot rear LCD, 'lethargic' contrast-detection autofocus—especially in low light—and lacks both a built-in flash and an AF-assist lamp.
