Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Leica V Lux 40

  • Versatile 20x optical zoom (24-480mm equivalent) suitable for travel and wide-ranging subjects
  • Compact and lightweight design, making it highly portable for daily use
  • Integrated GPS module for automatic geotagging of photos
  • Fast autofocus performance (approximately 0.1 seconds)
  • Includes full Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements software
  • High-speed burst shooting capabilities (up to 10 fps at full resolution)
  • Sharp image quality across most of the focal range compared to similar compacts

What we don't like about Leica V Lux 40

  • Small 1/2.33-inch sensor leads to limited low-light performance and grain at higher ISOs
  • Lack of RAW format support, limiting post-processing flexibility
  • No built-in viewfinder or accessory shoe for external flash
  • Significant price premium for the Leica brand compared to its Panasonic equivalent (TZ30)
  • Fixed LCD screen does not tilt or flip, making certain angles difficult
  • Lack of manual focus capabilities
  • Relatively low battery life when using the GPS feature extensively

Verdict

The Leica V-Lux 40 is a premium compact travel camera featuring a 14.1-megapixel 1/2.33-inch CMOS sensor paired with a high-performance 20x optical zoom lens (24-480mm equivalent). Its main characteristics include an integrated GPS module for geotagging, a 3-inch 460,800-dot touchscreen LCD, and the ability to capture Full HD 1080p video at 60 fps. Key pros are its exceptionally portable 210g body, fast 10 fps burst shooting at full resolution, and reliable optical image stabilisation for handheld long-range shots. Notable cons include its relatively small sensor which can struggle in low light compared to larger-sensor alternatives, a lack of RAW file support for advanced post-processing, and a somewhat limited CIPA battery life rating of approximately 260 shots.
