Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Canon IXUS 220 HS

  • Extremely compact and pocket-friendly stainless steel design
  • Excellent colour reproduction and natural-looking images
  • Good low-light performance with the HS system
  • Quick and accurate autofocus in most lighting conditions
  • Records high-quality 1080p Full HD video with stereo sound
  • User-friendly menu system and dedicated video recording button
  • Impressive macro mode capable of focusing as close as 3cm

What we don't like about Canon IXUS 220 HS

  • Low-resolution 2.7-inch LCD screen makes critical image review difficult
  • Short battery life, especially when using flash or recording video
  • Noted shutter lag can be frustrating for fast-moving subjects
  • High-speed burst mode (8fps) is restricted to a lower 3MP resolution
  • Some users report a lack of overall image sharpness
  • Limited manual exposure controls and no dedicated delete or self-timer buttons
  • Port covers and body finish can feel somewhat fragile or cheap

Verdict

The Canon IXUS 220 HS is a slim, stainless-steel ultra-compact camera featuring a 12.1-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor paired with the DIGIC 4 processor. Its 5x optical zoom lens offers a versatile 24-120mm equivalent focal range with an f/2.7-5.9 aperture and built-in lens-shift image stabilization. Main pros include its pocketable 19.5mm thin design, full 1080p HD video recording at 24fps with stereo sound, and high-speed burst capabilities of up to 3.4 fps at full resolution. However, notable cons include a relatively small and low-resolution 2.7-inch (230k dot) LCD screen, the lack of a physical handgrip, and instances of softness or chromatic aberration in certain lighting conditions.
