DJI Osmo Action Review | 96 Data compared

The DJI OSMO Action marks an impressive entry into the action camera market, directly competing with the GoPro Hero 7 Black by matching many of its core specifications while offering several distinct advantages. A major highlight is its dual-screen design, featuring a 2.25-inch rear touchscreen alongside a highly useful 1.4-inch front color display that significantly simplifies framing for self-recording. Its "RockSteady" electronic image stabilization delivers smooth, gimbal-like footage that performs flawlessly on par with GoPro's stabilization. Furthermore, DJI outperforms its competitor by allowing users to enable its "Dewarp" (non-fisheye) mode across all resolutions and frame rates—including 4K at 60FPS—and provides granular white balance adjustments in manual pro mode.

However, the action camera has distinct drawbacks regarding image control and specialized modes. While it boasts a dedicated High Dynamic Range (HDR) video mode for richer highlight and shadow detail, turning this on completely disables the RockSteady electronic image stabilization and worsens rolling shutter artifacts. When it comes to traditional image quality, high-contrast scenes suffer from noticeable over-sharpening that magnifies shadow noise, with the camera currently lacking software controls to turn down sharpness or modify deep picture profiles outside of choosing between "Standard" and "D-Cinelike" modes. Lastly, because the video recording bitrate maxes out at 100Mbps using the H.264 codec, substantial compression artifacts become apparent when filming in heavy slow-motion profiles, such as 1080p at 240 frames per second.

Despite its strong performance, the camera suffers from several distinct drawbacks, most notably the complete absence of GPS tracking capabilities. It also lacks built-in livestreaming support, direct social sharing features, and a physical HDMI port for real-time monitoring. On the hardware and interface side, the touchscreens can become unresponsive when operated with wet fingers, and the use of blue text in the menu systems makes readability exceptionally difficult under bright sunlight. Lastly, battery performance remains highly limited due to the camera's compact size, offering only about 60 minutes of runtime when shooting at peak 4K/60fps settings.

The DJI Osmo Action is a robust action camera featuring a waterproof metal frame and a 12MP sensor paired with an f/2.8 ultra-wide 148-degree lens. Designed to compete directly with the GoPro Hero7 Black, it stands out by including a bright 1.4-inch front color screen that simplifies framing for vloggers. The camera captures up to 4K resolution video at 60fps and utilizes DJI's highly effective "RockSteady" electronic image stabilization (EIS) to deliver smooth, gimbal-like footage. Additionally, its imaging system automatically prioritizes face exposure, resulting in vibrant skin tones that are immediately ready for social media usage without post-production editing. However, the first-generation camera suffers from notable performance flaws. The primary disadvantage is a severe half-second lag on the live viewfinder when shooting at maximum 4K 4:3 resolution with RockSteady active, complicating the tracking of fast-moving targets. Furthermore, mobile connectivity is heavily flawed, with successful app pairings occurring in only roughly 1 out of 20 attempts during testing. Low-light recording yields grainy, noisy output, and physical compatibility is restricted due to limited dedicated accessory options and a distinct lack of housing...

The original DJI Osmo Action is a rugged, first-generation camera featuring a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, 4K/60fps video, and a, waterproof, and shockproof build. Its standout features include dual full-color screens for easy vlogging, effective RockSteady EIS for stabilization, and an HDR mode that improves detail, though it cannot be used with stabilization. Despite its strengths, the review notes significant drawbacks, including a slight image crop with RockSteady enabled, aggressive in-camera sharpening, and potential noise/compression artifacts in shadows. Furthermore, audio performance can be inconsistent, and the unit can feel slightly bulky, though it boasts an excellent user interface.

The DJI Osmo Action is a robust action camera featuring a 12MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor capable of recording 4K video up to 60fps and capturing raw (DNG) files. It shares a similar boxy design, mounting system, and housing setup with its primary GoPro rivals. However, it distinguishes itself with a dual-screen design: a 2.25-inch 16:9 rear touchscreen and a bright, 1.4-inch front display that works exceptionally well for outdoor framing and vlogging. Built to endure extreme activities, the camera features a sturdy metal body and delivers impressive waterproofing that allows it to submerge up to 11 metres without additional housing. The camera stands out for its competitive video quality and highly effective RockSteady stabilization system. The dual screens offer intuitive touch sensitivity and an easily navigable menu layout. On the downside, users will experience noticeable display lag on the screen when RockSteady stabilization is active. Furthermore, it completely lacks support for 4:3 60fps video capture and requires an external housing frame to use mounts. Despite these drawbacks, its aggressive pricing and dependable performance make it a powerful alternative to mainstream...

The DJI Osmo Action is a robust flagship action camera that serves as a highly capable alternative to GoPro models, standing out particularly due to its innovative dual-screen setup. The camera features a 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor supporting 4K video recording up to 60 fps, 1080p slow-motion up to 240 fps, and 12-megapixel photography. Key design highlights include a unique battery-door combination that streamlines battery replacements, a user-friendly plastic protective case, and a highly practical screw-on lens cap that easily accommodates aftermarket ND filters. Initial setup and firmware updates are seamlessly managed via Wi-Fi through the DJI Mimo smartphone application. The review highlights several distinct pros and cons regarding the camera's real-world usability and performance. On the positive side, it offers excellent value at its price point, strong electronic stabilization via "RockSteady" mode, a large 2.25-inch rear screen, and a 1.4-inch forward-facing screen that is exceptionally helpful for vloggers to frame their shots. However, the camera suffers from notable drawbacks: the forward-facing screen experiences a slight visual lag when RockSteady is active, audio quality is less crisp than competing GoPro models,...

The DJI Osmo Action is a durable, waterproof camera featuring both front and rear color displays for easy framing, capturing stabilized 4K/60fps video and supporting HDR. It offers versatile, user-swappable lens filters and excellent, easy-to-use mounting hardware. However, the review notes limitations, including a lackluster battery life and the absence of stabilization when shooting in HDR mode. Furthermore, the electronic stabilization is inferior to GoPro’s, and the unit lacks a native tripod socket, requiring accessories for standard mounting.

The Trusted Reviews assessment praises the original DJI Osmo Action as a durable, user-friendly competitor to GoPro, highlighted by a front-facing colour screen, 11-metre waterproofing, and excellent RockSteady stabilisation. However, the review notes significant limitations, including poor low-light performance due to a small sensor, lack of stabilization in HDR mode, a heavily cropped field of view when using stabilization, and poor, wind-susceptible audio quality.
