DJI Osmo Pocket Review | 96 Data compared

The DJI Osmo Pocket is an ultra-compact, lightweight 4K hand camera equipped with a mechanical three-axis gimbal designed to deliver cinematic, stabilised footage. Weighing only 116 grams and measuring 121.9mm in length, it easily fits into a pocket and is significantly smaller than premium smartphones. Targeted primarily at vloggers, YouTubers, and amateur filmmakers, the device features a 1/2.3-inch sensor, f/2.0 aperture, and can capture 4K video at 60fps or slow-motion 1080p video at 120fps. While it works as a standalone unit using its built-in 1-inch touchscreen, it unlocks advanced tracking modes like ActiveTrack and FaceTrack, along with robust editing features, when plugged directly into a smartphone via the DJI Mimo companion app. The camera stands out with significant pros, including incredibly smooth video stabilisation that far surpasses standard smartphone digital or optical systems, excellent battery life lasting up to 140 minutes, and a slick, user-friendly companion app. However, it does come with several distinct cons: it is not waterproof or ruggedly built without purchasing an additional case, lacks built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and does not include a standard tripod thread....

The DPReview evaluation of the original DJI Osmo Pocket highlights it as a highly portable, all-in-one 3-axis gimbal camera that delivers exceptionally smooth, stabilized 4K video, making it ideal for vloggers and creators seeking a compact, easy-to-use tool. Key strengths include its 116-gram weight, fast startup, sharp 26mm f/2.0 lens, and intelligent features like Motionlapse and ActiveTrack. Conversely, the review notes that the small 1/2.3-inch sensor offers image quality and low-light performance similar to standard smartphones, while the built-in microphone provides poor audio quality prone to wind noise. Additionally, the tiny touchscreen can feel restrictive, often requiring the purchase of extra accessories for full manual control and connectivity, says DPReview.

The DJI Osmo Pocket is a highly portable, pocket-sized 3-axis mechanical video stabiliser that excels in usability due to its near-zero friction setup, taking less than 10 seconds to pull out and start recording. It features a responsive 2.74cm touch screen for quick settings adjustment and delivers crisp 4K video at 60 FPS alongside effortless, high-quality motionlapses. However, the device suffers from a fair amount of grain in low-light situations due to its small 1/2.3” CMOS sensor, and the video quality degrades into a grainy texture when shooting slow-motion 1080p footage at 120 FPS. Additional limitations include mediocre overall image quality for photography, a small screen that can be fiddly for larger fingers, and automated software features like Active Track that frequently lose target tracking. Physical stability shows some vertical up-and-down movement when the user is walking, alongside occasional jerky direction adjustments from the gimbal head. Furthermore, the built-in battery cannot be replaced by the user; once its 400-charge lifespan degrades, the unit must be sent back to DJI for a paid replacement, which is a major long-term drawback for...

The DJI Osmo Pocket is an exceptionally small and lightweight pocket gimbal that offers outstanding portability and a discreet, nearly invisible profile for creators who want to vlog without drawing public attention. Built with a sturdy plastic frame and a 12MP sensor, it delivers surprisingly good video quality, supporting up to 4K at 60fps and 1080p at 120fps for slow motion. Users will appreciate its reliable autofocus, effective object tracking, decent low-light performance, and a battery life that reaches about 140 minutes when shooting at 1080p/30fps. Additionally, its native microphone performs admirably for its size, and the included protective case is highly functional. However, the device's ultra-compact design introduces several notable drawbacks, as it is so small that it can be difficult to grip comfortably, lacks enough physical weight feedback to naturally counteract hand bounce, and forces a tight field of view in selfie mode. It completely lacks a built-in 1/4"-20 tripod thread, and its bottom-mounted USB-C port makes it impossible to stand the device upright while charging. Operationally, users face a tedious mandatory product activation before first use and...

The DJI Osmo Pocket is an ultra-lightweight and compact 12-megapixel mechanical gimbal camera that weighs only 116g and easily fits into a pocket. It features a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor, an f/2 lens with an 80-degree field of view, and a 1-inch built-in touchscreen. Designed primarily as a travel and lifestyle camera for content creators, it delivers excellent stabilization and highly detailed RAW (DNG) still images with surprising dynamic range. Its video capabilities are a major highlight, offering high-quality 4K footage at up to 60p, 4x slow-motion in Full HD, and impressive cinematic features like Timelapse and Motionlapse. On the positive side, the review praises the device's exceptional portability, sharp day-time video quality, poppy colors, reliable autofocus, and excellent value for money at $599 AUD. However, it notes several distinct cons, including a tiny 1-inch screen that makes setting up modes like Motionlapse difficult, a small and seemingly unsecure multi-pin smartphone connection, and an annoying crop factor when shooting slow-motion video. Additionally, low-light performance is only decent compared to daylight, and users must push the Micro SD card unusually deep into...

The DJI Osmo Pocket is an ultra-compact, lightweight 3-axis stabilized camera designed primarily for casual videographers seeking stable 4K video up to 60fps and 12-megapixel still photos. Standing at just 4.8 inches tall, its standout pros include a highly stealthy design, natural color rendering, sharp image quality, and dual built-in noise-cancelling microphones. It features advanced video modes like ActiveTrack, FaceTrack, and a brilliant automated panorama mode that physically pans the built-in gimbal across four sequential shots. However, the device has notable cons, including a tiny LCD screen that makes it difficult to compose shots or verify image focus. While connecting a smartphone via the DJI Mimo app resolves the screen limitation and enables automatic panorama stitching, it makes the rig significantly bulkier, harder to handle one-handed, and introduces an unfamiliar user interface with no digital zoom. Furthermore, the camera suffers from slow focus speeds, lacks basic out-of-the-box features that require expensive separate accessories, and lacks the rugged, waterproof durability of traditional action cameras due to its fragile gimbal structure.

However, the device is heavily criticised for a series of restrictive design flaws and hidden, compounding costs. Its built-in microphones perform poorly outdoors against wind noise, forcing users to buy an expensive 3.5mm audio jack adapter; unfortunately, due to data restrictions on the USB-C ports, users must frustratingly choose between using external audio, utilizing the wireless Wi-Fi base, or plugging into external power banks. Additionally, the camera suffers from poor low-light performance above ISO 800, a lack of weather sealing, close-up focusing issues, and a fragile, non-replaceable battery system that eventually makes the entire unit disposable.

In this review, the authors express high satisfaction with their upgrade to the DJI Osmo Pocket, concluding that the device is absolutely worth the investment. The primary advantages highlighted are its powerful integrated gimbal stabilization and its ultra-portable, pocket-sized design. These physical traits make it a game-changer for weight-sensitive outdoor activities like hiking and backpacking. Additionally, the reviewers praise stand-out software features like ActiveTrack, which keeps a targeted subject centered automatically, and built-in motion lapse for effortlessly adding cinematic movement to their travel footage. Conversely, the review frames many of the product's benefits directly against the drawbacks of their previous vlogging gear, which served as the primary catalyst for the upgrade. Their old setup—a GoPro Hero 5 Black paired with a Zhiyun Smooth Q gimbal—suffered from being too bulky, cumbersome, and slow to adjust. It also failed to perform well in high winds, such as during open-top jeep rides. While the reviewers do not note many native flaws with the Osmo Pocket itself during their initial real-world video test, they do clarify that they use it alongside a GoPro Hero...

The Trusted Reviews evaluation highlights the DJI Osmo Pocket as an exceptionally portable and versatile camera that delivers smooth, mechanically stabilized video with robust battery life in a compact form factor. It is lauded as an ideal tool for vloggers, featuring an effective active face-tracking mode and a detailed DJI Mimo companion app for expanded control. However, the review notes that the device requires optional accessories to reach its full potential and suffers from occasional sluggish autofocus performance. Additional drawbacks include only average internal microphone audio quality, lack of native waterproofing, and no direct, out-of-the-box live-streaming capability.

The DJI Osmo Pocket introduces a completely new product category by shrinking drone camera technology and heavy-duty stabilization into a truly pocketable, handheld device. It features a 1/2.3-inch sensor—the same size as the Mavic 2 Zoom—paired with a fixed f/2.0 lens that provides a 28mm full-frame equivalent field of view. For professional filmmakers, its massive appeal lies in its ultra-compact footprint and low $349 price tag, making it a highly accessible, "no-brainer" B-camera to hand off to crew members for quick movement angles. When paired with a smartphone running the DJI Mimo app, users gain deep control over essential manual adjustments, including ISO, white balance, shutter speed, and frame rates up to 4K at 60fps. Despite these strengths, the review highlights several distinct compromises in this first-generation platform. The built-in 1-inch touchscreen is entirely too small to accurately judge focus, which can easily result in ruined, out-of-focus footage when shooting without a phone attached. Audio quality from the built-in microphones is mediocre and highly susceptible to wind noise, requiring an external microphone setup via a separate 3.5mm adapter to be...

The HD Warrior DJI Osmo Pocket Review highlights the compact 3-axis camera's capability as a companion to the Panasonic GH5, noting that its impressive 4K picture quality almost matches the professional profile of the GH5 with minimal color grading. Key pros mentioned in the review include its highly compact and genuinely pocketable size, good battery capacity, and its groundbreaking ability to shoot stabilized 4K footage at 50p. Additionally, the reviewer praises its excellent low-light performance for indoor filming under home lighting and the depth offered by the companion Mimo application. Conversely, the review outlines several prominent cons and design flaws, such as a noticeable vertical bounce while walking and an average internal audio quality. The physical placement of the second microphone on the base is highly criticized because it is easily covered by the user's hand during handheld shooting. Additional drawbacks include a sluggish autofocus, a built-in screen that is too small to be used for more than a basic framing guide, a frustrating inability to track subjects in 50p mode, and inconsistent WiFi connectivity when using the expansion kit...

The DJI Osmo Pocket is praised for its exceptional portability, 3-axis mechanical gimbal for smooth video, and high-quality 4K capabilities at a fair price point. Key advantages include a fast startup time, 12-megapixel photos, and a flat D-Cinelike profile for professional color grading, making it ideal for travel and vlogging. However, the review notes limitations like a small touchscreen that hinders manual control, lack of standard tripod threads, and no weather sealing for rugged use. Additionally, the bottom-mounted USB-C port hinders charging during use, and the 1/2.3-inch sensor can produce noise in low-light environments.
