Verdict
The Intel Core i9-12900KF suits 3D rendering and video editing, where its extra cores pay off, but it is more chip than most gaming builds need.

Third-party reviews

What we like about Intel Core i9-12900KF

  • Sixteen cores and 24 threads speed up heavy projects.
  • An unlocked multiplier gives you control over the clock speed.
  • A PassMark multi-core score of 40438 shows strong results on big workloads.
  • A Geekbench 6 single-core score of 2525 keeps everyday programs quick.
  • PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 lanes support fast newer drives and graphics cards.
  • Memory bandwidth of 76.8 GB/s helps the cores stay fed with data.

What we don't like about Intel Core i9-12900KF

  • Base power of 125 W means it draws a lot of power all the time.
  • Boost power peaks at 241 W, which needs strong cooling.
  • No cooler is included, so one must be bought.
  • No integrated graphics, so a separate graphics card is needed.

Verdict

Heavy projects and a chip you can push are the reason to look at the Intel Core i9-12900KF. Its PassMark multi-core score of 40438 and Geekbench 6 multi-core score of 14850 show strong results on heavy work. Sixteen cores, eight of them fast and eight efficient, carry the load with 24 threads. Single-core speed is strong too, with 2525 in Geekbench 6, so everyday programs respond fast. The multiplier is unlocked, so you can push the clock past the factory setting. The downside is power draw: 125 W at base, and boost peaks at 241 W. No cooler comes in the box, and with no integrated graphics, a separate card is required too. It suits a builder who already has a cooler and a graphics card on hand and wants to tune the clock.
