What we like about NVIDIA Titan RTX

  • Massive 24GB GDDR6 VRAM is ideal for memory-intensive professional workloads like deep learning, AI research, and 8K video editing.
  • Fully unlocked TU102 GPU provides the highest level of performance for 3D rendering and creative content creation.
  • Excellent 4K gaming performance, consistently leading consumer-grade benchmarks.
  • Support for NVLink allows for memory pooling of up to 48GB when using two cards.
  • Dedicated Tensor and RT cores offer significant acceleration for AI inferencing and real-time ray tracing.
  • High-end aesthetic with a unique gold finish and solid build quality.

What we don't like about NVIDIA Titan RTX

  • Extremely high MSRP ($2,500) makes it a poor value proposition for pure gaming compared to the RTX 2080 Ti.
  • Reference dual-axial cooler design recirculates hot air into the case rather than exhausting it out like blower-style Quadro cards.
  • Limited manufacturer support and lack of ISV certifications found on professional Quadro workstation cards.
  • Poor performance-to-price ratio for gaming, often only 5-10% faster than significantly cheaper consumer cards.
  • Audible fan noise and high operating temperatures (70-80°C) under full load.
  • Weak double-precision (FP64) performance compared to the previous-generation Titan V.

Verdict

The NVIDIA TITAN RTX, launched in December 2018 based on the 12nm Turing architecture, is a powerhouse featuring 4,608 CUDA cores, 576 Tensor cores, and 72 RT cores. It is equipped with 24 GB of ultra-fast GDDR6 memory on a 384-bit interface, delivering a massive 672 GB/s bandwidth and 130 Tensor TFLOPS of deep learning performance. Main pros include its immense VRAM capacity for large AI datasets, exceptional 8K video editing capabilities, and NVLink support to scale memory to 48 GB; however, it suffers from a high launch price of $2,499, significant power draw (280W TDP), and poor double-precision performance compared to specialized workstation cards.
