What we like about Sigma SD15

  • Outstanding image quality and sharpness at low ISO (50-800) due to the Foveon X3 sensor
  • Produces unique, 'natural' Foveon colors, particularly praised for skin tones and artistic texture
  • Rugged, 'tank-like' build quality that feels professional and durable in hand
  • Generous buffer performance that avoids locking up during shooting
  • Simple user interface with easy access to important settings through hardware buttons
  • Large and bright optical viewfinder compared to other cameras in its class

What we don't like about Sigma SD15

  • Significant digital noise and poor performance at higher ISO settings (above 800)
  • Lacks modern standard features such as Live View and video recording
  • Proprietary Sigma SA lens mount limits lens availability compared to Canon or Nikon
  • Slow and difficult-to-use proprietary RAW processing software (Sigma Photo Pro)
  • Tendency to clip highlights with even slight overexposure
  • Autofocus can be slow and is not considered 'top notch' by modern standards

Verdict

The Sigma SD15 is a mid-sized DSLR featuring a 14.06-megapixel Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor (APS-C) and the TRUE II image processor, delivering a maximum output resolution of 2640 x 1760. Its key characteristics include a pentaprism viewfinder with 98% coverage, a 5-point TTL phase-difference autofocus system, and a 3.0-inch 460k-dot LCD screen. Main pros include exceptional color accuracy and a unique film-like texture at low ISO settings, a durable 100,000-cycle shutter, and a generous 21-frame RAW buffer that supports continuous shooting at 3 fps. However, it suffers from significant noise at sensitivities above ISO 800, lacks modern features like video recording or live view, and has relatively slow autofocus compared to its contemporaries.
