Summary of the review

Third-party reviews

Based on 5 buyer reviews from online shops.
Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Nikon 1 S2

  • Extremely fast continuous shooting (up to 20 fps with autofocus and 60 fps with fixed focus)
  • Compact, lightweight, and pocketable design ideal for travel
  • Highly responsive hybrid autofocus system (phase detection and contrast AF)
  • Simple, non-intimidating interface well-suited for beginners
  • Good video capabilities including 1080/60p recording and electronic stabilization

What we don't like about Nikon 1 S2

  • Relatively short battery life (rated at approximately 270 shots)
  • Lack of built-in Wi-Fi (requires an optional adapter for connectivity)
  • Fixed LCD screen with no tilt or swivel functionality
  • Limited physical controls and dials, making manual settings menu-dependent
  • Switch to microSD cards from full-sized SD cards can be inconvenient for some

Verdict

The Nikon 1 S2 is a compact, entry-level mirrorless camera featuring a 14.2MP CX-format CMOS sensor and the EXPEED 4A image processor. It is defined by its remarkable speed, offering continuous shooting rates of up to 20 fps with full autofocus tracking and a staggering 60 fps with fixed focus. The camera includes a sophisticated hybrid AF system with 135 points (73 phase-detection), Full HD 1080p video recording at 60p, and a native ISO range of 200–12,800. Key pros include its ultra-portable, lightweight design, exceptionally fast autofocus, and the inclusion of high-speed slow-motion video modes. However, it suffers from several drawbacks, such as the lack of a built-in viewfinder, the absence of integrated Wi-Fi (requiring an optional adapter), limited physical control dials, and a relatively short battery life rated for approximately 270 shots.
