What we like about Insta360 Ace

  • Excellent low-light performance with dedicated denoising algorithms
  • Versatile 2.4-inch flip-up touchscreen that simplifies framing for vlogging
  • True 8K video capability allowing high-resolution 4K digital zoom punch-ins
  • Highly reliable FlowState image stabilization that rivals gimbal footage
  • Fast battery charging speeds, reaching an 80% charge in 20 minutes
  • Robust companion app featuring clever AI editing tools and highlight detection
  • Great physical durability and effective built-in audio processing options

What we don't like about Insta360 Ace

  • The camera lens guard cannot be removed or replaced by the user
  • Lacks support for 10-bit recording, limiting flexible professional color grading
  • Noticeable softness in video corners at times and minor white balance shifts
  • The 8K recording mode is limited to low frame rates and lacks active HDR
  • Bulkier size and heavier weight profile compared to primary competitors
  • The magnetic quick-release mounting system can be clumsy and requires care
  • Polarized sunglasses can make the rear display appear completely black

Verdict

The Insta360 Ace is a versatile action camera featuring a 1/2-inch 48MP sensor capable of recording up to 6K video at 30fps and 4K at 120fps for high-quality slow motion. Its primary characteristic is a 2.4-inch flip touchscreen that simplifies vlogging and selfie framing, complemented by a rugged design waterproof up to 33 feet (10m). Key pros include an intuitive magnetic mounting system, AI-powered 'PureVideo' for enhanced low-light performance, and convenient software features like 'Cancel Recording' and 'AI Highlights Assistant' that streamline the editing process. However, notable cons include a smaller sensor and slower standard charging compared to its 'Pro' sibling, as well as a non-replaceable lens guard that makes the device more vulnerable to permanent scratches.
