The GoPro Hero 8 Black introduces a major, cage-less body redesign featuring built-in, folding mounting rings on the bottom, allowing users to mount the camera directly to gear without a bulky frame. This change enables the use of "Mods," which are attachable physical accessories like an enhanced port adapter with a shotgun microphone, a flip-up preview screen, and an LED light. On the software side, the device significantly improves usability through highly customizable menus and presets that minimize the need to navigate the touchscreen in harsh environments. Additional internal upgrades include incrementally better HyperSmooth 2 stabilization, cleaner audio from a wind-optimized microphone, more natural SuperPhoto HDR handling, and an automated TimeWarp mode. Furthermore, RAW image capture is expanded to all photo modes using the wide lens, including time lapses. However, the hardware redesign brings several notable downsides. The camera's new square lens housing means previous lens filters are incompatible, and unlike the previous generation, the lens cover is no longer removable or replaceable, leaving the camera without an easy insurance policy against physical damage. Additionally, the camera loses its native...

The GoPro Hero8 Black is an outstanding, rugged, and waterproof action camera that captures stabilized 4K video at up to 60fps, 2.7K at 120fps, and 1080p at 240fps. It features a slightly redesigned metal frame with integrated, magnetic mounting clips that eliminate the need for an external cage. Key advantages highlighted in the review include its class-leading HyperSmooth digital stabilization, a front-facing microphone, a bright and crisp 2-inch touch LCD, and an improved user interface utilizing customizable Capture Presets. Additionally, it boasts USB-C charging, GPS logging, a companion app with automated video editing, and compatibility with an intriguing new Mod expansion ecosystem designed for vlogging. Despite these upgrades, the camera has a few notable drawbacks. The single battery compartment, which houses the USB-C port and microSD slot, is quite cramped, making it difficult to extract the memory card at times. Wireless video transfers over Wi-Fi to a smartphone can also be quite time-consuming, especially since high-quality 4K footage is saved at a hefty 100Mbps bit-rate. Furthermore, shooting at the highest-quality settings drains the battery quickly, yielding only about 70 minutes...

The DPReview evaluation of the GoPro Hero8 Black concludes that while action camera technology has reached an evolutionary plateau, this model introduces highly practical, refined hardware and software features, including a frameless design with built-in folding mounting fingers. The camera is heavily praised for its HyperSmooth 2.0 image stabilization, which delivers steady 4K/60p video, along with improved TimeWarp 2.0 and an updated user interface. The GoPro Hero 8 Black refines the action camera experience with structural and feature-driven upgrades, earning its place as a top-tier choice despite maintaining the same 12-megapixel sensor, lens, and S1 image processing chip as its predecessor. Its most notable design overhaul is the integration of built-in, fold-out mounting fingers at the base, completely eliminating the need for a separate plastic mounting frame and allowing users to easily swap out batteries or the microSD card while mounted. On the software side, the camera introduces HyperSmooth 2.0 electronic video stabilisation with a highly effective "Boost" mode for uncanny, gimbal-like smoothness, alongside an intuitive "Auto" setting for TimeWarp 2.0 that removes the guesswork from capturing motion time-lapses. Additionally, audio performance is greatly enhanced by a redesigned lens housing that dramatically minimises wind roar up to 25mph, and user convenience is boosted by a presets facility to save up to ten custom capture configurations. However, the review highlights several drawbacks to consider before purchasing. A primary drawback is physical incompatibility; because the camera has a slightly altered shape and a shorter lens housing,...

The GoPro Hero 8 Black introduces a design overhaul by integrating built-in magnetic mounting fingers directly into the camera base, eliminating the need for a separate frame housing and granting unhindered access to the battery and memory card slot. Action sports fans benefit from HyperSmooth 2.0, which delivers fluid, top-tier stabilization across every single resolution and frame rate—including slo-mo and a high-impact "Boost" mode. Usability is a core strength, marked by an improved user interface featuring Capture Presets for specific activities, a live-view slider for Digital Lenses, and a LiveBurst photo mode that saves 1.5 seconds of footage before and after clicking the shutter. Furthermore, a new 100Mbps maximum bitrate at 4K resolution provides noticeably sharper video quality over its predecessor. However, these hardware updates come with notable trade-offs, as the camera lacks a built-in HDMI port and no longer features a removable lens cover, which complicates the use of traditional neutral density or color filters. Legacy lower resolutions like 720p and 960p have been entirely phased out. While the updated TimeWarp 2.0 hyperlapse tool includes an automated speed sensor...

The GoPro Hero 8 Black is an action camera that introduces a completely redesigned, slimmer body featuring built-in, fold-out finger-flip mounting points that eliminate the need for an external camera case. It delivers highly impressive video stabilization via HyperSmooth 2.0, which works across all framerates when paired with its redesigned battery, and introduces enhanced creative features like TimeWarp 2.0, Live Burst photo mode, and an improved 100Mbps bitrate for 4K video. To expand its functionality for vloggers, GoPro launched optional modular accessories, including a Media Mod with a 3.5mm mic jack and HDMI-out port, a 2-inch flip-up Display Mod selfie screen, and a 200-lumen Light Mod. Despite these advancements, the camera's physical redesign brings notable drawbacks, most significantly a fixed, non-removable lens cover that makes it difficult to add ND filters and means a scratched lens requires an expensive factory repair. It lacks a built-in forward-facing screen to compete with rivals like the DJI Osmo Action, and omitting an onboard HDMI port forces users to purchase...

This review of the GoPro Hero 8 Black by Shane from Geeky Nerdy Techy highlights the camera as a highly capable tool for filmmakers and content creators, praised primarily for its impressive video features. Notable pros include its amazing 4K video quality paired with a "Linear" mode that eliminates the traditional, distorted fish-eye look. The HyperSmooth 2.0 stabilization, along with its "boost" mode, provides flawless, gimbal-like smoothness during panning and walking. The camera suffers from poor low-light video performance that becomes incredibly noisy after dusk, alongside "okay at best" battery life that drops to roughly 40 minutes during stop-and-start vlogging. Users will also encounter severe overheating...

In his final review on Mark Blackard's blog, the author delivers a definitive farewell to the GoPro Hero 8 Black after filming with it almost every single day for about three months. The review is triggered by a sudden, fatal accident where the camera slipped from his lap and suffered a mere two-foot drop to the ground. This relatively minor impact completely put the device out of commission, leading him to reflect on his overall daily experience using the action camera for his cooking show and travel recordings. The review weighs specific performance highlights against a major durability flaw. On the positive side, the camera proved to be a highly capable daily driver, offering excellent functionality for intensive daily content creation and video production.
