Verdict
Intel Core i7-4790 is a fast, non-overclockable quad-core for demanding work, but its built-in graphics are weak and it adds little over the i7-4770.

What we like about Intel Core i7-4790

  • Four cores and eight threads handle everyday multitasking.
  • A 4 GHz boost clock keeps light tasks responsive.
  • Supports up to 32 GB of DDR3 memory.
  • 8 MB of L3 cache keeps data close to the cores.
  • Works in an older DDR3 PC, so no new memory is needed.
  • PCIe 3.0 with 16 lanes gives a graphics card its standard link.

What we don't like about Intel Core i7-4790

  • Memory is limited to DDR3 at 1600 MHz, so newer memory cannot be used.
  • Memory bandwidth of 25.6 GB/s limits memory-heavy work.
  • Base power of 84 W is high for the performance it gives.
  • It is built on an older 22 nm process.
  • The unlocked multiplier is no, so there is no tuning.

Verdict

Four cores and eight threads, with a 4 GHz boost, make the Intel Core i7-4790 a budget chip for older systems. Its PassMark multi-core score of 10008 is fine for web browsing, office work and light photo editing. Single-core speed is modest, with 2225 in PassMark and 1276 in Geekbench 6, so heavy single-thread work takes longer. It takes only DDR3 memory, capped at 1600 MHz and 32 GB. Memory bandwidth of 25.6 GB/s also limits memory-heavy work, so big files and large spreadsheets feel slow. Its base power of 84 W is high, and the chip is built on an older 22 nm process. It suits someone with an older DDR3 PC who wants a cheap upgrade for everyday tasks, and its 8 MB of L3 cache keeps those tasks flowing.
