What we like about Sigma DP1 Merrill

  • Exceptional image detail and color resolution at low ISO (especially ISO 100)
  • Unique Foveon X3 sensor provides film-like depth and micro-contrast
  • High-quality, sharp fixed 19mm f/2.8 lens (28mm equivalent)
  • Superb black and white image output with rich tonal transitions
  • Solid, utilitarian build quality with simple, straightforward menus
  • Compact size suitable for landscapes and street photography on the go

What we don't like about Sigma DP1 Merrill

  • Extremely poor battery life (often fewer than 100 shots per charge)
  • Significant image noise and color degradation above ISO 400
  • Slow write speeds and long buffer clearing times (especially with RAW files)
  • Sluggish autofocus performance, particularly in low-light conditions
  • Requires proprietary Sigma Photo Pro software for optimal RAW processing
  • Lack of built-in image stabilization and poor video quality (480p maximum)
  • Fixed focal length lens limits versatility for different shooting scenarios

Verdict

The Sigma DP1 Merrill is a premium large-sensor compact camera launched in 2012, featuring a unique 46-megapixel APS-C Foveon X3 direct image sensor and a fixed 19mm f/2.8 lens (28mm full-frame equivalent). Its main characteristics include a 3.0-inch 920k-dot LCD screen, a lens-mounted manual focus ring, and dual TRUE II image processors that output 14.8-megapixel images. The camera's main pros are its unmatched per-pixel sharpness, exceptional color resolution, and superb detail at low ISO settings. However, it has significant cons, including incredibly slow write speeds, a cumbersome RAW file processing workflow, poor battery life of only around 97 shots per charge, and very poor image quality at high ISO settings.
