What we like about Pentax WG-3 GPS

  • Extremely rugged design: waterproof up to 14 meters, drop-proof up to 2 meters and crush-proof up to 100 kg.
  • Bright lens with f/2.0 aperture that ensures good performance in aquatic environments and low light conditions.
  • Precise integrated GPS module for photo geotagging, enriched by digital compass and pressure/altitude sensors.
  • Great macro mode for detailed close-ups.

What we don't like about Pentax WG-3 GPS

  • Disappointing battery life, especially when the GPS module is always active.
  • Weak flash and slow charging times.
  • Difficulty focusing in low light conditions and disappointment with the 'digital microscope' mode which tends to burn out the lights.
  • The rear screen is prone to scratches if not handled with care.

Verdict

The Pentax WG-3 GPS is a rugged, adventure-oriented compact camera featuring a 16-megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor and a bright 25-100mm equivalent f/2.0-4.9 lens with sensor-shift image stabilization. Designed for extreme environments, it is waterproof down to 45 feet (14m), shockproof from 6.5 feet (2m), crushproof to 220 lbf (100kg), and freezeproof to 14°F (-10°C). Key advantages include its fast f/2.0 maximum aperture for better low-light performance, a unique macro ring light with six LEDs for close-up shooting as near as 1cm, and a comprehensive GPS system that includes a digital compass, pressure gauge, and altitude display. However, the camera suffers from below-average battery life, sluggish autofocus in low light, a slow flash recharge time, and noticeable noise and color fringing in images at higher ISO settings.
