What we like about Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS

  • Excellent rugged build: Waterproof to 12m (40 ft), shockproof, freezeproof, and crushproof.
  • High-quality 16MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor captures sharp details and Full HD videos.
  • Built-in macro LEDs around the lens provide excellent illumination for close-up shots.
  • Integrated GPS chip tracks location data efficiently with improved acquisition times.
  • Distinctive, eye-catching design suited for outdoor activities and adrenaline sports.

What we don't like about Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS

  • Slow startup and cycle times can cause missed action shots.
  • No dedicated video button, requiring users to navigate menus to start recording.
  • Default sharpening can lead to slightly soft images.
  • The menu button is placed awkwardly close to the delete button, leading to accidental deletions.
  • Lack of optical or mechanical image stabilization; relies on digital shake reduction.

Verdict

The Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS is a rugged, adventure-proof compact camera featuring a 16-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens (28-140mm equivalent). Built for extreme environments, it is waterproof up to 40 feet, shockproof from 5-foot drops, crushproof up to 220 pounds of force, and freeze-proof down to 14°F. Key features include an integrated GPS module for geotagging, Full HD 1080p video recording at 30 fps, and a unique Digital Microscope mode with six built-in LED macro lights for subjects as close as 1cm. Main pros are its class-leading depth rating, exceptional durability, and vibrant outdoor image quality. However, it lacks optical image stabilization (relying on digital SR instead), suffers from sluggish autofocus and shot-to-shot speeds, and exhibits poor low-light performance with high noise levels above ISO 400.
