What we like about Olympus XZ-2 iHS

  • Excellent image quality with good color rendition and sharpness
  • Bright, high-quality lens (f/1.8-2.5) for low-light shooting
  • Versatile tilting touchscreen with touch-to-focus functionality
  • Fast autofocus and quick overall performance
  • Strong, robust build quality with customizable control ring and buttons
  • RAW image format support for post-processing
  • Good value for money (if found used/on sale)

What we don't like about Olympus XZ-2 iHS

  • 12-megapixel sensor limits extensive cropping or large prints
  • Autofocus can be slow for action/sports compared to modern cameras
  • Mediocre video quality/performance
  • Not entirely pocketable due to its size and weight
  • Susceptible to dirt entering the lens mechanism
  • Limited dynamic range in very low-light, high-ISO situations

Verdict

The Olympus Stylus XZ-2 iHS is a premium enthusiast compact camera featuring a 12-megapixel 1/1.7-inch BSI CMOS sensor and a fast 28-112mm equivalent i.ZUIKO lens with a bright f/1.8-2.5 aperture range. Key characteristics include a 3-inch tilting touchscreen with 920,000 dots, an innovative hybrid control ring for manual settings, and a built-in ND filter. Its main pros are excellent image quality with natural colors, a fast autofocus system, and versatile manual controls that appeal to advanced photographers. However, notable cons include significant image noise at high ISO settings (ISO 800 and above), a bulky design that isn't fully pocketable, and a lens cap that can easily be pushed off when the camera powers on.
