The Asus ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless is a highly praised 96% compact gaming keyboard that retains a full number pad while saving desk space. Priced at $180 / £170, the reviewer crowns it as the best new gaming keyboard they have used in years due to its phenomenal typing and gaming experience. A major highlight is its factory-lubed Asus NX Snow linear switches, which drop smoothly into place to offer a quiet, premium, and highly responsive pitter-patter sound. Outperforming rivals like the Corsair K70 Max and SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL in typing comfort, the board features robust sound-dampening foam, hot-swappable switches, durable PBT keycaps, an adjustable multimedia control wheel, and dual-device flexibility with 2.4GHz wireless and Bluetooth toggling. Despite its high praise, the keyboard has a few layout compromises and software drawbacks. Because the layout is compressed into a smaller footprint, the delete key sits further away from its traditional position, and the UK ISO version has a shortened shift key to accommodate the arrow keys—both of which require user muscle-memory adjustment. The Asus ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless is an outstanding, premium $179 mechanical gaming keyboard that offers superb performance for competitive players and office typists alike. Built like a tank with a plastic chassis, an aluminum top plate, and double-shot shine-through PBT keycaps, the hardware is exceptionally robust yet remains lighter than many bulky rivals. Users will enjoy the incredibly responsive, pre-lubed ROG NX Snow linear switches, which feature a low 1.8mm actuation point, paired with custom stabilizers that eliminate key friction. Standout physical perks include a highly comfortable, magnetic detachable leatherette wrist rest to reduce strain, a customizable clickable roller for media and lighting, and a phenomenal, industry-leading battery life that lasts up to 1,500 hours with the RGB backlighting turned off. However, the keyboard is not without its flaws, particularly regarding its software and layout. The 96% layout can feel confusing and cramped, failing to actually save substantial desk space compared to a traditional full-sized layout. Additionally, the mandatory Armoury Crate companion software is highly frustrating; it suffers from long update times, frequently fails to detect the...

Its battery life is a massive standout feature, rated for an incredible 1,500 hours over 2.4GHz wireless with the per-key RGB lighting turned off (and a still-respectable 90 hours with illumination at maximum brightness). However, there are notable cons to consider. The compact 96-percent layout feels quite cramped, and it offers only a single layer of key programmability, meaning secondary functions tied to the Fn key cannot be remapped. Additionally, users must contend with Asus's bloated and counterintuitive Armoury Crate software for firmware updates and Omni Receiver device pairing. Ultimately, at its $179.99 launch price, it stands as an excellent, well-constructed compromise for gamers who refuse to sacrifice a premium typing experience. Are you considering buying this keyboard primarily for heavy competitive gaming or for office data entry?
