What we like about Keychron K17 Max QMK Wireless

  • Versatile connectivity with 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.1, and USB-C wired modes
  • Ultra-slim low-profile design (22mm) provides ergonomic comfort without needing a wrist rest
  • Practical 96% layout includes a full number pad while remaining 1.5 inches smaller than traditional full-size boards
  • Full QMK/VIA support allows for deep customization of keys, macros, and layers via the web app
  • Sturdy build quality featuring an aluminum top case and durable double-shot PBT keycaps
  • Convenient rotary knob for volume control and muting

What we don't like about Keychron K17 Max QMK Wireless

  • Stock keycaps are not shine-through, making the RGB backlighting mostly decorative and hard to see in the dark
  • Some users reported inconsistent key registration, including skipped or double/triple actuations
  • Low-profile switches can feel 'muddy' or 'harsh' to some compared to standard mechanical switches
  • Lack of a built-in storage slot for the 2.4 GHz USB receiver makes it easier to lose during travel
  • The Caps Lock indicator light is dim and difficult to see from many typing angles

Verdict

The Keychron K17 Max is an ultra-slim 96% layout wireless mechanical keyboard that balances a full number pad with a compact footprint, featuring a 1000Hz polling rate via 2.4GHz and USB-C, alongside Bluetooth 5.1 for multi-device pairing. It is built with an aluminum-topped chassis and low-profile Gateron mechanical switches that are 31% thinner than standard ones, supported by double-shot PBT keycaps and acoustic foam for a premium typing feel. Its main strengths include full QMK/VIA customization for remapping keys, a hot-swappable PCB for easy switch changes without soldering, and dedicated Mac/Windows compatibility. On the downside, the low-profile design means it is only compatible with specific Gateron/Keychron low-profile switches, and the 2000mAh battery offers a relatively modest runtime of up to 64 hours with RGB enabled compared to non-slim models.
