What we like about NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 12GB

  • Increased VRAM capacity (12GB) allows for higher quality textures and better performance in memory-intensive modern games compared to the 6GB model.
  • Solid performance for 1080p and entry-level 1440p gaming, often performing between the original RTX 2060 and the RTX 2060 Super.
  • Supports modern features like real-time ray tracing and AI-powered DLSS, which can significantly boost frame rates in compatible titles.
  • Generally quiet operation and efficient cooling in many partner card models, with some fans only activating under load.
  • Useful for budget productivity and workstation tasks, such as AI research, due to the inclusion of Tensor cores.

What we don't like about NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 12GB

  • Limited by a 192-bit memory bus, which can bottle-neck the extra 12GB of VRAM and prevent significant performance gains over the 6GB version at higher resolutions.
  • Often criticized for poor value at launch, frequently priced higher than more modern and capable cards like the RTX 3060.
  • Ray tracing performance is relatively weak compared to newer generations, often requiring significant setting sacrifices or DLSS to remain playable.
  • Slightly higher power consumption (185W TDP) than both the original RTX 2060 and the RTX 2060 Super.
  • Viewed by many as an unnecessary release that was primarily aimed at crypto miners during the GPU shortage rather than gamers.

Verdict

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 12GB is a refreshed mid-range GPU based on the 12nm Turing architecture, featuring 2,176 CUDA cores, 34 RT cores, and 272 Tensor cores—aligning its processing power closer to the RTX 2060 Super than the original 6GB model. Key characteristics include 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM with a 192-bit memory interface, a base clock of 1,470 MHz, and a boost clock of 1,650 MHz. Its primary pros are the significantly expanded memory buffer, which prevents VRAM-related stuttering in modern games and productivity tasks, and support for DLSS and real-time ray tracing. However, notable cons include a higher TDP of 185W compared to its predecessors and a memory bandwidth of 336 GB/s that remains identical to the original version, which can bottleneck performance at higher resolutions like 1440p.
