What reviewers say about the WHOOP 5.0

Sleep and recovery insights and coaching earn strong praise, but the subscription model is widely criticised, as are sports features.

What owners say about the WHOOP 5.0

Based on 206 owners sharing their experience in online comments

31%positive9%mixed60%negative

Owners value screen-free, useful health tracking, but high subscription costs and broken upgrade promises fuel the strongest frustration.

What owners dislike

  • Owners say the membership is expensive and not worth the cost, and some cancel because the subscription does not justify the price.52
  • Owners feel misled because the promised free hardware upgrade now requires extra fees or a longer membership term.32
  • Owners say older 4.0 bands do not fit the 5.0, so buying the upgrade means buying new straps as well.13
  • Owners say heart rate readings are often off during workouts, especially weight lifting and intervals, compared with chest straps and other watches.8
  • Owners say sleep tracking is inaccurate and naps are not logged, and the band cannot wake them during light sleep.8
  • Owners report billing problems, such as renewal charges after cancelling and refunds for returns that were refused.6
  • Owners say the strength trainer is poor and that the band misses low-heart-rate activities such as fitness workouts.6
  • Owners say customer service failed to resolve device faults, such as a broken ECG feature, and gave no solution.5
  • Owners find the new tiers and plan changes confusing and feel the one-plan promise of free upgrades was broken.5
  • Owners find the band uncomfortable and fiddly to wear, with tightening issues and marks on the skin, and say the bicep band is awkward.5

Points mentioned by at least 3 owners, most mentioned first.

What we like about WHOOP 5.0

  • A 14 days battery means it rarely needs charging.
  • At 24 g it is light enough to wear day and night.
  • Sleep, resting heart rate and HRV are tracked overnight.
  • A readiness score shows how hard to train on a given day.
  • Its 145 exercises cover a wide range of activities.
  • The band is designed for golf as well as training.

What we don't like about WHOOP 5.0

  • There is no display, so the time is never on your wrist.
  • No GPS and no distance tracking mean runners need another device.
  • A full charge takes 2.5 hours.
  • The 1 ATM rating rules out swimming.
  • A yearly membership is an extra cost on top of the band.

Verdict

Most of what the WHOOP 5.0 does happens while you are not looking at it. It is a screenless band with a battery that lasts 14 days, and it tracks sleep, resting heart rate and heart rate variability in the background. Its 145 exercises and swim stroke counter make it useful beyond sleep. A readiness score and a recovery time advisor turn the numbers into a plain daily idea of how hard to train. The trade-offs are real. There is no display, no GPS and no distance tracking, so a runner will want another device. A full charge takes 2.5 hours, and at 1 ATM it suits a splash or a shower rather than a swim. It fits someone who wants steady recovery feedback and does not need the band to show the time.
