What we like about Sigma DP2x

  • Exceptional image quality with rich, natural colors and high resolution from the Foveon X3 sensor.
  • Sharp, high-performance fixed 24.2mm (41mm equivalent) f/2.8 lens with minimal distortion.
  • Solid, sturdy build quality with a tactile manual-centric design.
  • Quick access to common settings via the 'QS' (Quick Set) menu.
  • Dedicated AEL (Auto Exposure Lock) button which aids in focus-and-recompose shooting.

What we don't like about Sigma DP2x

  • Slow autofocus system, particularly unreliable in low-light conditions.
  • Significant write times for RAW files and a small buffer that limits consecutive shots.
  • Poor LCD screen resolution (230k pixels) that is difficult to use for manual focusing or viewing in bright light.
  • Subpar video quality limited to QVGA (320x240) resolution.
  • Limited ISO range for JPEGs and poor high-ISO performance compared to modern CMOS sensors.
  • Requires proprietary Sigma Photo Pro software for optimal RAW processing.

Verdict

The Sigma DP2x is a high-end compact camera featuring a unique 14.06-megapixel APS-C Foveon X3 direct image sensor (effective 4.69 MP per layer) and a fixed 24.2mm f/2.8 lens providing a 41mm equivalent field of view. Key characteristics include the TRUE II image processing engine, an Analog Front End (AFE) for improved color reproduction, and full PASM manual controls within a sturdy, metal-clad body weighing roughly 260g. Its main pros are exceptional image sharpness, rich color fidelity, and a film-like aesthetic that rivals DSLRs in good lighting. However, the camera suffers from significant cons, including a low-resolution 2.5-inch (230k-dot) LCD screen, very slow autofocus and RAW write speeds, and poor high ISO performance above 800.
