Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Panasonic LUMIX DMC 3D1

  • Extremely compact and pocket-friendly for a dual-lens 3D camera
  • Capable of shooting high-quality 1080i HD 3D video and 3D stills
  • Innovative dual-shot mode allows capturing 2D video and stills simultaneously with different focal lengths
  • Fast start-up and shot-to-shot performance compared to rivals
  • Large, responsive 3.5-inch touchscreen interface
  • Effective built-in image stabilization (Mega O.I.S.) for steady shots

What we don't like about Panasonic LUMIX DMC 3D1

  • Short battery life, often failing to reach the rated 200 shots
  • Lack of a 3D-capable preview screen (requires a 3D TV to view 3D effect)
  • Limited manual controls, especially in 3D mode where ISO and white balance are locked
  • Small stereobase (lens separation) limits the 3D depth effect beyond ten feet
  • High initial price point made it an expensive niche product
  • No built-in viewfinder, making it difficult to use in bright sunlight

Verdict

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 is a highly compact, 193-gram dual-lens digital camera equipped with two 1/2.3-inch 12.1-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensors and twin 4x optical zoom lenses (25-100mm equivalent, f/3.9-5.7). A standout characteristic is its ability to shoot true 3D photos and 1080i HD video, as well as a unique dual-shooting 2D mode that allows users to capture still photos and video simultaneously at different focal lengths using separate lenses. Its primary pros include effective MEGA Optical Image Stabilisation (O.I.S.), continuous shooting at up to 8 fps, and a large 3.5-inch 460k-dot touchscreen display that enables intuitive side-by-side split-screen viewing. However, its main cons are the inability to preview 3D content directly on the 2D-only camera screen, a short CIPA-rated battery life of 200 shots, the lack of manual exposure controls, and no RAW file support.
