Sony Action Cam HDR AS15 With Wi-Fi Review | 96 Data compared

The Sony Action Cam HDR-AS15 marks Sony's lightweight, shotgun-style entry into a market dominated by GoPro, offering full HD 1080p recording at 30fps and electronic image stabilisation at a 120-degree field-of-view. It delivers accurate colours, strong automatic exposures, and detailed audio from its stereo microphone. Operating the camera is straightforward; pressing the big recording button instantly triggers video capture, even when the device is fully powered off. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity pairs with the PlayMemories Mobile app on iOS and Android, allowing users to effortlessly transfer media and use their smartphones as a wireless remote viewfinder. However, the hardware suffers from significant physical and feature-related limitations. The camera is incapable of sitting upright on its own without its included waterproof casing. When inside this case, the side menus become entirely inaccessible, preventing any setting adjustments unless the unit is removed. Crucially, the camera lacks an internal image or lens rotation setting, meaning any sideways or upside-down mounting setups force users to manually rotate the footage in post-processing. Finally, while video performance is reliable, the still photography mode is restricted to...

The Sony Action Cam HDR-AS15 is a solid first step into the wearable camcorder market, offering a competitive price point of around $270 and an onboard menu system that outperforms many rivals. Key highlights include its built-in Wi-Fi feature, which links directly to smartphones to act as a remote viewfinder and controller without needing internet access. Additionally, it stands out for its excellent battery life of 162 minutes, fluid motion capture, a robust waterproof housing rated up to 197 feet, and unique in-camera slow-motion modes that produce smooth 720p footage at 60fps or 120fps.

In this review, the author shares their perspective on upgrading to the Sony HDR-AS15 POV Action Cam for shooting point-of-view videos, often mounted on guns or himself. The reviewer highly praises the camera's built-in Wi-Fi capability, which pairs with the PlayMemories Mobile smartphone app to stream real-time video directly to an iPhone. This feature acts as a remote viewfinder to adjust camera angles, start/stop recordings, change settings, and wirelessly copy pre-recorded video files. Backed by solid online research, the reviewer notes that the device delivers excellent video and audio quality, standing out as a particularly strong performer in low-light environments compared to rival action cameras. Key technical strengths highlighted include the highly effective SteadyShot image stabilisation, a Carl Zeiss lens with adjustable 120 or 170-degree viewing angles, Full 1080p resolution at 30fps, and a 720p Super Slow-mo mode at 120fps. Despite the strong performance, the reviewer outlines several notable drawbacks to consider before purchasing. A primary limitation is the design of the included waterproof case; while it is rated for depths down to 60 metres (about 200 feet), it completely...

The Sony HDR-AS15 is a lightweight, compact action camera that excels in usability and value, making it a strong competitor against first-generation GoPro and Contour models. A standout feature is its highly efficient "standby" functionality, which allows the camera to remain background-powered and start recording instantly at a single touch, conserving battery for up to two days of intermittent filming. It delivers crisp 16-megapixel interval stills and quality video up to 1080p at 30fps or high-speed 720p at 120fps for ultra-slow motion. Additional pros include adjustable 120-degree or 170-degree fisheye fields of view and a highly competitive price point of $270 for the WiFi-enabled version and $200 without WiFi. Despite these strengths, the reviewer notes several prominent design and performance cons. The included goggle and headstrap mount is heavy, double the profile size of Contour mounts, and lacks rotational flexibility, restricting the lens to point strictly wherever the operator's face is aimed. Furthermore, using the mandatory waterproof case for winter sports significantly increases the camera's size and weight by roughly 50%. While the $70 WiFi addition allows users to preview...

The review on The Occasional Traveller highlights the Sony Action Cam HDR-AS15 as a capable underwater camera, praised for its compact design, built-in Wi-Fi, and included waterproof housing, which are ideal for filming in the Maldives. It competes well with GoPro models, offering a lightweight, travel-friendly option that effectively captures large marine life. Conversely, the review notes significant drawbacks, particularly the lack of an integrated screen for framing shots, which necessitates a smartphone connection. Other cons include an unstable design that cannot stand on its own and restricted access to ports when using the protective housing. YouTube ·

The Sony Action Cam (HDR-AS10 and Wi-Fi-enabled HDR-AS15) is a highly compact and lightweight POV camcorder that offers a solid entry into the action camera market for its budget-friendly price point. Among its main advantages, the device features a small body design weighing just 3.2 ounces, a decent selection of recording options (including 1080p video and 4x slow-motion capture), and an external mic jack. Additionally, it comes packaged with a rugged housing that provides dust-resistant seals and waterproofing down to 197 feet, while the upgraded AS15 model includes useful Wi-Fi capabilities for smooth remote control via a mobile app. However, the camcorder's physical design introduces several notable limitations that compromise its overall usability. Because of its rounded bottom, the Action Cam cannot stand upright on its own and requires a mount during operation. Furthermore, using the included waterproof housing completely blocks the built-in stereo mics and entirely cuts off physical access to both the settings buttons and the external mic jack. The camera also suffers from disappointing video performance when blown up on large screens, displaying heavy artifacting during fast-motion...

The Sony Action Cam HDR-AS15 marks Sony's initial entry into the wearable adventure camera market, offering a compact, credit-card-sized device that performs admirably in fluid motion capture and low-light sensitivity, needing only six lux to record usable images. A standout feature is its built-in Wi-Fi, which transforms a paired smartphone into a remote viewfinder and controller via the PlayMemories Mobile app, effectively making up for the small, text-only onboard LCD screen. The camera boasts exceptional battery life—lasting 162 continuous minutes—and features an on-camera menu system that is superior to its competitor Contour, alongside built-in, 720p slow-motion processing modes. However, the camera has several performance and design drawbacks. The image quality suffers from heavy color oversaturation (reaching 127% in bright light and 145% in low light) and a lack of sharpness compared to traditional consumer camcorders. While the device handles low light sensitively, the resulting imagery is plagued by extreme noise, artifacts, and pixelation. Physically, the plastic body feels fragile without its included waterproof case. When housed in the case, the menu buttons become completely inaccessible, the locking mechanism proves awkward,...

The Sony HDR-AS15 Action Cam features a unique design that pairs a lightweight, mini camcorder with a tough, waterproof housing. Testers highlighted its impressive SteadyShot electronic image stabilisation, which delivered highly stable footage during off-road tests without the vertical shimmering effects typical of other action cameras. The camera natively records 1080p video at up to 60fps, includes a time-lapse mode, and handles slow-motion recording. Additionally, it offers direct playback via HDMI and includes built-in Wi-Fi connectivity to transfer files directly to mobile devices using Sony's PlayMemories Mobile app. However, this solid motion performance comes with notable drawbacks. The overall video quality is only mediocre, showing a lack of detail and visible noise in static shots, alongside poor colour accuracy that rendered the blue sky as turquoise. Reviewers also found the accompanying mobile app to be clunky, experiencing performance crashes on certain smartphone processors. Finally, the small LCD screen is strictly limited to menu navigation rather than video previewing, and buying essential official mounts—like the headband or handlebar accessories—can quickly become expensive.

The Sony Action Cam HDR-AS15 serves as a highly capable entry into the point-of-view camera market, offering distinct high-speed recording modes that stand out for action sports. According to the review, a major performance highlight is its excellent "super slomo" capabilities, which capture exceptionally smooth video at high frame rates. The camera records fluid footage when played back at normal speeds, benefiting from a high bitrate that maintains a clean, acceptable level of video quality during fast-paced movements. Additionally, the built-in Wi-Fi functionality paired with the Sony PlayMemories companion mobile app works reliably. This wireless setup proves highly useful for mountain bikers and athletes looking to frame up their shots accurately and quickly review recorded footage before packing up from a trail location. YouTube · However, the hardware does come with some notable limitations that complicate its operation in the field. One prominent drawback is that users completely lose audio recording when shooting in both the 60 frames per second and 120 frames per second high-speed frame rates, which may annoy those looking for an immersive soundscape to accompany their...

The Sony HDR-AS15 Action Cam is a compact, Full HD sports camcorder that is half the size of a palm and comes equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, available in Singapore for S$499 including a waterproof case. A major strength of the device is its Carl Zeiss Tessar lens, which delivers great video quality and offers two wide viewing angles of 120° and 170°. Its Wi-Fi functionality pairs seamlessly with the Sony PlayMemories Mobile app to serve as a lag-free remote viewfinder on smartphones. Additionally, the included waterproof housing provides heavy-duty protection up to a depth of 60 metres while still allowing the camera to capture audio. However, the action camera has several notable drawbacks, particularly regarding its physical design and casing usability. When shooting at the ultra-wide 170° angle, the camera's image stabilisation is automatically disabled, resulting in shaky footage. Operating the physical "Prev" and "Next" buttons can also lead to accidental lens smearing. Furthermore, the waterproof case restricts access to the camera's settings menu and causes the camera to fog up within minutes when Wi-Fi is left on, requiring users...

The Sony Action Cam HDR-AS15 is a highly lightweight and ultra-compact point-of-view camera designed to compete directly with models like the GoPro HD Hero 2. Weighing under 100 grams, it features an intuitive physical design with a simplistic menu system and a large, user-friendly red button that instantly initiates Full HD video recording. Its core strengths reside in its impressive video performance, utilizing Electrical SteadyShot image stabilization for smooth, low-jitter footage, alongside a standout 720p recording mode operating at 120 frames per second for ultra-smooth slow motion. Additionally, it includes built-in Wi-Fi, allowing users to alter settings such as the field of view (from 120 to 170 degrees) and preview shots directly from a smartphone. The bundle provides great value by packaging the device with a rugged, waterproof casing capable of submerging down to 60 metres underwater. Despite these capabilities, the hardware and software suffer from noticeable design limitations. A primary physical drawback is the camera's structural build; the door on the back of the device feels flimsy, and the lens lacks a rotating feature found in rival models. When...
