GoPro HERO5 Black Review | 96 Data compared

The GoPro Hero5 Black represents a substantial step forward for the action camera line, most notably introducing native waterproofing up to 10 meters (33 feet) without requiring a bulky external housing. It features a revamped, intuitive touch display on the back, voice control capabilities in seven languages, and electronic image stabilization that crops the field of view by about 10% to smooth out shaky footage up to 2.7K resolution. For advanced users, the camera brings high-value production tools like a RAW photography mode and the ability to record three individual audio tracks from its separate onboard microphones to combat wind noise. Additionally, battery life is improved over previous estimates, lasting roughly 1 hour and 31 minutes when recording continuous 4K video at 30 frames per second. Despite these strong hardware upgrades, the camera is heavily bogged down by a frustrating user interface and a convoluted software ecosystem. While the built-in GPS successfully geotags photos and videos, it lacks native sports telemetry capabilities at launch, preventing users from overlaying metrics like speed or G-forces directly within the GoPro suite. The touch...

The PCMag review highlights the GoPro Hero5 Black as an Editors' Choice winner, featuring a built-in 2-inch touchscreen and native waterproofing up to 33 feet (10 meters) without external housing. This flagship model offers excellent 4K video at 30fps and improved convenience through a streamlined design at a lower launch price. Facebook · Conversely, the review identifies significant battery drain, particularly when using the touchscreen, and a lack of direct external microphone support without an adapter. Furthermore, the new battery design is incompatible with older GoPro accessories, requiring users to upgrade their charging equipment.

The GoPro Hero5 Black serves as a versatile all-in-one solution for capturing, editing, and sharing action footage, correcting a major flaw of its predecessor by introducing a bright and highly responsive touchscreen. It eliminates the need for bulky extra polycarbonate housing by being independently dustproof and waterproof up to 10 metres, which significantly improves audio quality. The camera carries over elite performance metrics like 4K video at 30fps and 1080p at 120fps from the Hero4 Black, but adds novel upgrades including 12-megapixel raw photo formatting, wide dynamic range mode, electronic image stabilization (EIS), distortion-correcting linear-view video, and an automated three-microphone stereo system for wind reduction. It features an intuitive, hands-free voice control engine that supports 12 commands for easy toggling between modes, and captures internal GPS data that can be converted into speed, altitude, and g-force video overlays using the Quik desktop application. Despite being an exceptional flagship upgrade, the Hero5 Black suffers from a predictably short battery life, lasting only about 1.5 hours when recording in 4K or when utilizing battery-heavy features like EIS, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Compounding this...

The GoPro Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session represent a major upgrade for the action camera lineup, distinguished primarily by their ability to remain fully waterproof up to 10 metres without needing an external plastic housing. Both models introduce helpful voice control in seven languages, allowing users to start recording or take photos hands-free to save battery and storage space. In terms of performance, the cameras excel by capturing sharp 4K video at 30 frames per second, featuring enhanced electronic image stabilisation and a rugged, part-rubber design built to endure heavy impacts. The Hero5 Black also adds a bright, high-contrast two-inch LCD touchscreen display and shoots high-quality 12-megapixel photos in JPG and RAW formats. However, the review highlights several notable drawbacks, particularly regarding the Hero5 Black’s touchscreen interface, which is criticized for being frustratingly unresponsive to swipes and repeated finger jabs. Additionally, the power-hungry screen limits battery life to just two hours, and the battery runs very hot during continuous recording. While the smaller Hero5 Session successfully matches the Black's 4K video capabilities and waterproofing, its audio quality is noticeably lower....

The Wareable review praises the GoPro Hero5 Black as a top-tier action camera featuring native 33-foot waterproofing without a housing, electronic image stabilization, a 2-inch touchscreen, and voice control. Key strengths include improved audio, durable construction, 4K video capabilities, and convenient GPS tracking. YouTube · Conversely, the review notes drawbacks, specifically highlighting mediocre battery life, particularly when using screen and GPS functions, and a high price point. The design is described as functional but aesthetically uninspiring, and the, small screen can make menu navigation feel cramped.

The GoPro HERO5 Black earns a strong 4 out of 5 stars by introducing major design upgrades, most notably a native "case-free" waterproof body capable of diving up to 10 metres without an external housing. Reviewers praise its exceptional video quality, which captures stunning Ultra HD 4K footage backed by professional-grade electronic video stabilisation for smooth, wobble-free results. The inclusion of a rear touchscreen display makes changing settings and reviewing clips highly intuitive, while the unencumbered body significantly improves stereo audio quality, eliminating the muffled sound found in older, encased models. Additionally, the camera features a 12-megapixel photo sensor with Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) and hands-free voice controls for shooting on the go. However, the action camera has a few notable drawbacks, particularly regarding its power and accessory management. The HERO5 Black quickly chews through battery life—especially when recording in 4K resolution—requiring users to carry multiple spares or purchase a fast-charging dock. Furthermore, because the camera body lacks built-in mounting connectors, it must be placed inside a supplied mounting cage to attach to any accessories. This cage is criticized for...

The GoPro Hero5 Black is highlighted as a sophisticated yet user-friendly action camera that delivers excellent 4K video resolution and a built-in image stabilisation system to eliminate shaky footage. Photo capabilities are notably improved with a 12-megapixel sensor, a 30 frames per second burst mode, and a Wide Dynamic Range mode that provides more options during post-production. Navigating the camera is straightforward thanks to a high-quality rear touchscreen, a single-press top Record button, and hands-free voice control functionality. Additionally, it features a rugged, waterproof design that does not require an external housing case, making it highly durable for mountain environments. The review outlines several pros, including its robust waterproof construction without a case, intuitive voice controls, an upgraded touchscreen interface, and seamless quick-editing capabilities via the companion phone app. It also points out the advantage of its high-quality video stability and compatibility with external accessories like the Karma Grip and drone for advanced filming. However, the review hints at cons regarding the brand's history, noting that previous GoPro models required practice to learn complex menu layouts before this iteration simplified...

The GoPro Hero 5 Black and Hero 5 Session transition GoPro from a hardware-focused company into an accessible ecosystem for automated storytelling. The flagship Hero 5 Black ($399) features a new 2-inch touchscreen and a rubberised exterior that makes it waterproof up to 33 feet without a separate housing. The smaller Hero 5 Session ($299) shares nearly identical feature sets, including voice controls and built-in electronic image stabilisation (EIS). Key positive highlights across both models include intuitive, hands-free voice activation for hands-busy tracking, significantly clearer audio, and a linear field-of-view setting that removes the harsh fisheye distortion. However, both units suffer from notable drawbacks, including overheating issues when shooting in 4K resolution. The software companion app Quik still lacks refined timeline editing, and the automated GoPro Plus cloud service is constrained by distinct limits, such as a 35-hour video storage cap and automatic downsizing of high-res 4K files to 1080p. Hardware compromises are also apparent; the Session locks users to an unreplaceable internal battery, while the Black introduces a larger 1,220 mAh battery that breaks backward compatibility with older GoPro...

The Points in Focus review highlights the GoPro Hero5 Black as a compact, capable action camera, praising its small, lightweight design that avoids obstructing views when mounted. Key pros include a simple two-button interface and a "QuikCapture" feature that immediately starts recording from a powered-off state, making it an efficient, "set-it-and-forget-it" tool. While lauded for usability, the review notes it is a first-impressions piece, lacking a deep, quantitative analysis of image quality. The primary cons relate to user-experience "gripes" with the interface, which, despite having a screen, faces scrutiny compared to competitors, ultimately positioning the device as a reliable action-focused, rather than purely cinematic, camera.

The GoPro Hero5 Black stands out as a powerful and highly versatile action camera, highlighted by its smooth video footage and advanced feature set. TechRadar notes that it introduces a rear touchscreen, voice control, GPS tracking, and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which makes it incredibly simple to operate for both beginners and seasoned videographers. Additionally, GoPro completely overhauled its post-production apps, removing a major historical pain point by allowing users to effortlessly edit and create engaging stories directly from their raw or standard footage. However, the camera is not without its operational flaws. Reviewers found that the rear touchscreen can become quite fiddly and unresponsive, particularly when it gets wet. Battery life also remains an issue that needs noticeable improvement for extended shoots. Finally, the design omits the traditional protective plastic casing; while this makes it sleeker, it ultimately leaves the unit feeling slightly exposed to harsh environmental elements during rugged use.
