Average grade from independent test sites, magazines and video reviewers, 1–10.
How we count it
Grades: Each review's own score is converted to 1–10; without one, we grade the review ourselves. Big test sites count more, short reviews half as much as full tests. A video review counts half.
Score: The average grade is 80% of the review mark; the number of reviews is the other 20% (1 review = 5, the typical number in this category = 8, the most-reviewed model = 10).
Enough data: With few reviews, the average grade is pulled toward the typical grade of this category. No reviews yet: 7.2 for now.

Verdict
The AMD Ryzen 5 5500F is a six-core update of the 5500 that adds PCIe 4.0 and runs games about 8% faster, but Intel's Core i3-14100F edges it at 1080p.

Third-party reviews

What we like about AMD Ryzen 5 5500F

  • Six cores and twelve threads cover heavy multitasking on a budget.
  • A 4.4 GHz boost clock speeds up programs that use one or two cores.
  • The unlocked multiplier allows the clock to be changed.
  • A cooler is included in the box.
  • PCIe 4.0 gives fast links to storage and graphics.
  • Supports up to 128 GB of DDR4 memory.

What we don't like about AMD Ryzen 5 5500F

  • There is no integrated graphics, so a graphics card is required.
  • Only 16 MB of L3 cache, or 2.67 MB per core, limits busy work.
  • There is no Turbo Boost version.
  • DDR4 memory at 3200 MHz caps bandwidth at 51.2 GB/s.

Verdict

A buyer who wants six cores on a tight budget will find the AMD Ryzen 5 5500F a practical choice. Its boost clock reaches 4.4 GHz, and twelve threads keep several tasks moving at once. The chip is unlocked, so the clock can be changed by hand, and a cooler is included in the box. The L3 cache is 16 MB, or 2.67 MB per core, so heavy work has less data close to hand. PCIe 4.0 and DDR4 memory at 3200 MHz set the speed of the rest of the system. The downside is that there is no integrated graphics, so a graphics card is a must. It suits a first PC build for gaming, school work or home office tasks.
