AKG N20 Review | 93 Data compared

The Trusted Reviews evaluation of the AKG N20U (£80) highlights a unique universal remote for toggling between iOS and Android, offering high-fidelity sound with detailed mids and precise treble, alongside an unusually powerful 20-60Hz sub-bass response. While the sound is impressive, the review notes a lack of cohesion where the intense, "bolted on" sub-bass can overpower delicate midrange details, and the 3.5mm wired design requires an adapter for many modern smartphones. The AKG N20 is a pair of normal, non-wireless, and non-noise-cancelling wired earphones that features 7mm drivers housed in small aluminum earpieces. It stands out with a robust, non-removable cable wrapped in a tight fabric weave to prevent tangling, and a unique 3-button remote containing a switch that toggles compatibility between iOS and Android smartphones. However, a major design oddity is that the front button-side of the remote and the outer panels of the earpieces are made of plain black plastic, conflicting with the eye-catching, shiny bevelled aluminum styling elsewhere. Additionally, due to large bass ports on each earpiece, the earphones only offer fair noise isolation, meaning they may struggle to block out background sound on noisy daily commutes. Sonically, the review highlights that the earphones offer excellent mid-range and treble detail, providing a clear, precise, and realistic upper frequency performance without becoming cutting or harsh. On the downside, the presentation lacks an overall sense of airiness and suffers from a highly pronounced, overly keen sub-bass response fueled by the aggressive tuning of its bass ports. This heavy sub-bass creates...

The AKG N20 wired in-ear headphones feature a premium, single-piece aluminum body that provides excellent build quality and a comfortable, stable fit inside the ear. Packaged in a well-padded box, they come with multiple accessories including three sizes of silicone earplugs, a rubberized semi-hard carrying case, a specialized cleaning tool, and a dual-airplane adapter. The headphones include a 1.2-meter cable—rubberized at the top and fabric-braided at the bottom—equipped with a three-button microphone remote and a unique slider switch to toggle operating modes seamlessly between iOS and Android devices. The primary strength of the AKG N20 is its highly accurate, legible, and balanced studio-like reference sound signature, which maintains zero distortion even at its very high maximum volume level. The midranges and highs are ideally balanced, and while the neutral sound profile avoids overwhelming, super-thick bass, the lower frequencies still remain clearly audible. On the downside, the build quality of the integrated controller is lower than the rest of the unit, as its main button is loosely seated and clicks slightly during movement. Additionally, there are no physical left and right...

The AKG N20 in-ear monitors offer a treble-forward, analytical sound profile featuring pristine midrange clarity, deep sub-bass extension, and a comfortable, robust design with functional 3-button controls. These earphones are highly regarded for portable, detailed listening or light mixing, presenting a sound signature often compared to the Beyerdynamic DT880. However, the N20's specialized acoustic tuning results in minimal passive noise isolation due to shell venting, making them poor for noisy environments unless paired with foam tips. Additionally, they are not intended for bass-heavy listening, providing a lighter mid-bass punch compared to competitors like the Sennheiser CX 5.00, and some users may find the midrange dry or flat.
