How do dehumidifiers help prevent mold?
Dehumidifiers help prevent mold by lowering the relative humidity that mold needs to grow, but they do not kill established mold or remove contaminated materials. A practical target is about 50–60% RH, measured with a reliable hygrometer in the affected room rather than assumed from the machine display alone.
The dehumidifier should run long enough to control moisture after showers, cooking, drying clothes, or water entry. Around 10–20 L/day suits many homes, while larger or persistently damp rooms may need 20–25 L/day or more; compare the test temperature because extraction falls in cool or already-dry air.
Mold prevention also depends on the building. Repair leaks, improve extraction and airflow, insulate cold surfaces, and dry wet materials instead of increasing capacity indefinitely. If growth is widespread, returns after cleaning, or may affect health, use appropriate remediation advice rather than relying on a consumer appliance.
